well, on the internetmachine I have only the Realtek SPDIF (ASIO4ALL) sent to a Philips DCC (same converters as the old A16), monitored through a NAD1020, so it shouldn't be entirely bad...

is there a mild irony intended to prove that the vintage Sharcs are STILL unmatched in audio quality ?

that thing almost occupies an entire P4 2.6 and with what result ?
the artifacts surely sound interesting (and are unquestionable useful), but this is lightyears from the quality processing one is used to on THIS platform.

the GUI is a complete mess btw, not just visually, but also the handling - hey Shroomz, you're much better than I originally assumed...

some sounds are indeed 'beautiful', but only in a narrow range of keys - if you play notes spread over several octaves you effectively hear 3 or 4 entirely different instruments.
One might call it a feature, tho

disappointed, Tom

I was not that impressed too. Only listening to the mp3s though.

Just installed it, checked it out (only the gui) & well, oh dear. What's goin' on with those wheel of fortune verniers? To be fair they've done a decent job with the keyboard & chickenheads, even although the perspective doesn't work. Could say a lot more, but it doesn't feel right to somehow

Might be a nice synth, but I don't think I'll get as far as finding out.

I just thought with its oversampling feature it sounds nice for a VSTi...

And yes the GUI is overfilled, but then again with all the knobs its very powerfull...

the price is fair, I think...

.. worst . interface . EVER! ..

pretty weird GUI design philosphy too. "oh it's obvious what the knobs do! no need to make it readable!"

...

also pretty funny, from the features page:

"Poly-Ana uses an oversampling technique for its anti-aliasing solution which is quite effective on lower and middle pitched notes. However, at the top of the scale, even at full 8X oversampling, the aliasing artifacts become quite apparent. There are techniques we can apply to effectively reduce aliasing to inaudible levels, but they come at the cost of further CPU demand, and we feel at this point that we've struck a balance between CPU usage and sound quality."

(emphasis mine)

ugh.

well, it DOES install under Win98 and even seems quite happy with the 1.3G Tualatin - at least with reduced poly.
Looks like a fair amount of the artifacts is emphasized by the Realtek digital out (how's analog then ?).
I rarely use that format for anything else but planetZ downloads and audio demos it's not really a concern.

Listening to the ProFive immidiately afterwards reveals an interesting difference:
the scaling of the parameter knobs is much more 'playable' on the Scope synth - and (as mentioned in Symbiote's quote) these bottom-to-top sweeps are simply impossible on the VSTi.
But it's in fact one of the better VST synths - and good to illustrate what separates the boys from the men (to quote that ad...)

cheers, Tom

It´s good to have scope.

In the vst world I came to this one lately.

It´s a plessure to program and automate this synth. Soundwise, great.

one kvr member posted a sounddemo done with Poly-Ana, and I think it sounds wonderful and impressive:

The Scope synths sound more "fat" in general and more rough. (analog)

But I`m still missing an instrument that has that nice large detailed textured pads to complement the fat synths on CW platform ...

Yes,
For a VSTi it sounds good compared to others. I still get all synth calls from MIDI Works. My producer friend was using a guy who had a huge collection of VSTi's. Then came Scope. The only VSTi's I have heard that I like are additive synth types, or physical modeling types. The analog emulation, and even FM emu's are just not there yet. Maybe some new guys who don't worry about CPU cycles will get an algo or 2 w/ the new Conroes, as they seem to be very powerful CPU's 4 audio tasks. Until then it is my Oberheims, and SFP, period.
