jippi - got my vdat

So the Q
I putting together a new project, how would you route it?

ASIO2 32 Source1 > VDAT IN1 > STM2448 ch1 > VDAT OUT1 > STM1448 ch13
or
ASIO2 32 Source1 > STM2448 ch1 > VDAT IN1 >

or do you use 1 vdat for rec and an other one for playback? (messy routing with 1)

I start with alt 1

It does look better than the cheesy gui suggests. Unfortunately the vids left me non the wiser as to setting up live monitoring on recorded inputs in Scope as they are already setup in them. From the helpfile it says you need to set up your ins and outs but I have done this but even with record armed, a Scope input selected and output selected I still can't hear while I play until I play it back - very easy to set up in other hosts.

Maybe but for a start I just want to hear myself while I'm playing rather than have to record it and then play it back.

well, you can monitor the source directly by sending it to both vdat and a mixer, or you can choose to monitor the input(automatic in record mode)of the vdat....remember any output can feed multiple inputs although inputs can receive from ony one output....

I guess its a matter of what i intend to record - clean (eg intrument IN) or with effects (eg a mix)

Just started, and i thought the vdat tracks wave-files needed to be of accurate same size, so for a test, I deleted 60 samples from track 1, and still the session played well.

As editor i will use Audition 1.5

Now i need to find a way to set up for auto-record when i start cubase. (the manual might be a good place to start

)

When you work out how to sync cubase and Vdat will you hold my hand and walk me through? I've tried a few times and just can't push the right buttons.

sorry emzee - no tutorials here.
But i got vrc-s to sync to vdat

and plenty midicommands, but after a while nothing happened.
Think i forget the vrc-s for a day or 1000!
But for no good use, since cubase don't react

So this is how to use vdat:
Start cubase and jumpstart vdat as soon as...?
or the other way around?

The good thing is the punch in/out - makes the whole device usefull.
Also a little prob understanding the absolute/relative time. Why the h does it say 13h 28m 02s 01f on a 5 min tape?
(and it is not 13:28 o'clock either)!

Maybe the timing will be a little more accurate when i quit using the vrc-s dev.

i've succesfully synced w/vdat. i prefer to just record in the sequencer if i want to work with one though, it's just simpler.

vdat is my choice if i'm doing straight-forward recording.

you can either connect the vrc's midi out to the seq midi dest and sync via midi clock or better, use asio2 and connect the vrc clock out to the vdat clock in(like normal) and then the vdat clock out to the asio2 dest clock in. sync to asio in cubase.

only start and stop work with midi clock. with asio, start, stop, locate points and ff and rw work. be advised though that while the sequencer and vdat lock pretty well, almost perfectly, the stop and start lags. be sure to avoid recording anything in the first bar or two in cubase, because you'll only catch about half of it. you'll need to allow for some preroll(not the setting, actual tape time rolling by).

also, if you fool with connections too many times or load new tapes, you might as well restart scope and reload the vdat and vrc as the vrc may freak out. if you only load the project you want to work on, it'll be solid and dependable.

no, that's digital sync.
timeline sync menu is found under transport/sync setup...

Do like Gary B says and set the timecode source in cubase to 'ASIO Positioning Protocol' hit play on the VRC-S then on cubase transport click on the sync so that instead of internal it should say 'lock' at this point you're rockin'
