Stanley Clarke / George Duke
I saw a concert here in Las Vegas last month that as usual kicked my ass. I love live players as opposed to lip synced shows with over quantised parts. More and more stars are really sucking ass IMHO. like Shania Twain at the Superbowl game not long ago. She forgot her own song and totally fucked up in front of millions of people. I know most people didn't notice, but I did. And Sting with No Doubts Gwen Stefano smoked her weak show due to the improv. and audience participation. Don't get me wrong, Shania has a great voice, and talented writer ( if you like JoeBob music ), but I detest these bimbos, and bimboys trying to jive everyone with their weak attempts at a LIVE gig. I still think Shania has one of the best terdcutters in the business, but it is so lame to watch this shit. Meanwhile back at the ranch. I am a big fan of jazz fusion 4 it's open ended improv and lack of vocals, which I am personally tired of hearing, and old kick ass funk. Duke and Clarke were unbelievable, and I hope they go on to Europe so you guys can see some of Americas best LIVE players.
They are not coming anywhere near Vancouver.
I've been a Stanley Clarke fan since the mid seventies. For a while Jazz Fusion was al lI listened to.
I just looked at the Stanley Clarke website and there is no mention of a show in Las Vegas. Must have been something special.

It was at the Orleans Casino Showroom. It came as a shock to me also, as usually here in Vegas there are alot of has been bands making big cash. I have seen several shitty renditions, and many great ones like Ray Manzarek as the Doors was fantastic, I really enjoyed how close it sounded to the real Doors. Things just pop up here w/o much notice, I wish you could hear them up in BC. I really want to hear that stuff over and over, 4 it is so inspiring to see the old warriors doing battle still. Let me know what you hear on this. As I would fly anywhere on the West Coast to hear them again. I will sneak in a portable DAT this time, as their ideas just were so abundant, I must record it 4 anylitical purposes of course.
Just read your post on tour dates. Yeah, they were here over the Memorial Day weekend in May, had to check my stubs as I always save my tour laminants, and even movie ticket stubs. I guess people just drop in here w/o much notice. I only noticed because I live 1 mile away from the marquis. Good news 4 Astroman though. I saw the itinerary, and Russia and Europe will get to hear what we heard 30 years ago. It is an excellant show.

P.S. Hey Garyb, do you like jazz/funk? I'm going to LBJF on 8/12. I could bring down some of the new parts with me, the mobo/CPU/RAM and ATX/ATA combo.
Hey nprime how's the new synth treating you? It must be quite a musical boost to recieve a custom synth from the man who invented the mighty Prophet. Another great FAT BASTARD from JB.

Oh man, I would have liked to see that gig !
Jimmy you have a true enthusiasm for the scope platform and for music in general that is refreshing to say the least...
I do love jazz funk and all jazz derivative too.
Gearge Duke, Stanley Clarke, Weather Report (and now Zawinul Syndicate), Pat Metheny,John Scofield, Mike Stern, Yellowjackets (oh Geraldine...), Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Take 6 and of course Miles, are my all time favourite I'd take on a deserted Island (given it has a powerplant of course..
).
I'm listening to Silly Putty now, this is the only music tune my laptop can play because that suits it so well....
Viva la musica and keep up with the good music Jimmy !
Ps : I'll be glad to listen to the music you're recording with the Vdat now...

They are coming to Europe, don't miss these guys, they still rule IMHO, and what about Wayne Shorters' "Weather Update". True artists always feel strongly about ideas and eventually disagree and move on. Too bad about Zawinul and Shorter, they suffered so much when Jaco got killed. Could you imagine hearing Miles Davis Amandla album with Jason miles on SFP Live??!!!

I'll see them then !!!
Of course Wayne Shorter is one of the great too. His sound is instantly recognisable. He and Jan Garbarek are real "dreamy travellers" of the saxophone if that makes sense. The type of guys you recognize after only two bars (like Jaco, Hancock...) always putting their trademark on anything they touch...
Jaco has inpired many many musicians (not only bass players)!!
If only boucers were musicians too, he would never have died so stupidly !!

And yes, Miles live today, with current technology would be huuuuuge !!!
He was an early adopter of synths and technology as far as I remember...
I saw him 4 or 5 times on stage. I remember TUTU's release tour. Adam Holzman with 6 Akai S612, robert Irving with the Qx1 and all Yamaha DX line, Miles with an Oberheim (OBXa I think) doing fourth chords...
Oh my ! You're under arrest.

Bifop - Wow, you nailed all my favorites, as well! (Do you have the Yellowjackets new DVD, "Twenty Five"? Just wonderful!!)On 2006-07-12 03:25, Bifop wrote:

I was also really wanting to go to the Moogfest last month in New York - Jan Hammer, and Adam Holzman with Mahavishnu Project!! Sadly, I could not make it

Live Music rules!!!

I gotta come out as a fellow fusion freak. I tend to steer away from most of the stuff on the rockier end of the fusion scale, but a lot of it I still love - been listening to 'Journey to Love' by Stanley Clarke recently... 'Concerto for jazz-rock' is one of the most amazing pieces of music I've heard.
No John, but I'll get my hands on it very soon ! Thanks for the head up.On 2006-07-12 10:35, johnbowen wrote:

I too am amazed when I meet somebody with nearly the same readings and/or music taste. Different backgrounds, childhood, studies or people and yet same inspiration field or sometimes even identical sensitivity to a "gus bump passage" in the music...

Ain't life great ?

My favourite McLaughlin project is Shakti, which is one of the most interesting examples of fusion - Indian percussion, western string instruments, combining jazz and Indian classical. The original albums from the 70s have some incredible playing and writing, a truly universal sound and vibe.. I highly recommend them.
Ladies And Gentlemen,...Darkrezin,
You ears are very right too. McLaughlin was so ,..Vishnu. Only he could combine such different beauties together. I just love all that stuff. I think his work with Michaeal Tilson Thomas on Apocolypse was also phenominal, and his choice of keyboards with Gayle Moran was perfect 4 that particular work. She is fairly unrecognized, but I knew her as a top notch avant garde pianist who had such beautiful, off the wall voicings. I am now inspired to put some music together 4 all of us using synths and drums, but you will hear my roots coming from the artists we just discussed. They are IMHO what makes us strive for individuality.
To Us, And Those Like Us,

To Us, And Those Like Us,
I never took McLaughlin further than his coproduct with Santana on Love Devine, but that can't be put as Fusion anyway
I love seeing good ('classic', black?) jazz music performing tho, and Miles is a milestone anyway.
Just to prevent you from thinking I don't like jazz (as an improvising and performing type of skilled music).
It's a pity that 'our' own North See jazz Festival (starting these days again) brings so little real (traditional?) jazz.
a pity, except James Brown then, he was -like was Miles- a regulary guest at the NJF.
But...to set you up, I must say that I h@te Weather Report, tho there WAS a song, the titeltrack of a well know lp from the seventies, that I liked much, I gues the groove of Jaco's bassline together with the beat is what I like.
I still can listen to it
Strange that one song really hits me while all others don't (to say at least).
Pastorious of course was a renewer and made the fretless bass popular.
I'd like to see what he could've done in dance music

I was fortunate enough to be at Criteria Studios in Miami shortly after Jaco first recorded there. He use to go and sit in around Miami nightclubs at night and was definately a groove player. Weather Report is definately not known 4 dance, but Jaco brought some serious funk to the group. Alphonse Mouzon, Miraslav Vitous, and Jaco!! What a trio of bassists they had though. In the 70's and 80's, most of us had been through the disco and dance era, and Weather Report was a fresh reprieve from the basic 4/4 dance monotony. I still cringe at bands that only play with their little grooves in 4/4 over and over and over. I'm invited to go watch bands all the time, and usually refrain from it, as I find myself looking at my watch more than the people performing. This was not the case at the Duke/Clarke gig. Anyone who has never seen them should treat themselves to the show. Sorry, no drum machines allowed.
