My friend/producer of MIDIWORKS here in Las Vegas called me to come listen to his new Ursa Major STS-282. I thought that he had the old 3U model I had back in 1979 when they were new. It was the best/unique sounding reverb I ever bought, but it wasn't roadworthy, but the concept behind the design was sound. Princeton Digital realised it's worth and now have done a plug-in for PRO Tools. It sounded great. That made me want it. So I went home and re created it in SFP.
The STS-282 uses 8 multitaps which can be fed to a seperate echo tap, and all this can be fedback and looped if you like.
I simply made a nice room reverb by tweaking the decay to .5 seconds. Then I took my favorite plug, Celmo's Tape Sim, and tweaked it's time to where the echos are very tight,i.e. you don't notice that it is an echo, more like a reverberation from a foul smelling sewer. So as I play my Scarbee Rhodes sample into it, I backed the amount sent to the AUX to blend with the room reverb already running. So when I want the Ursa Major effect, I just raise the feedback level on the Tape Sim and it is spot on. No longer am I mad when Pro Tools gets something I can't have. SFP is as good as Pro Tools, if you are willing to spend a little time getting to know our tools. One could use the SSB Delay, and the CW Masterverb, instead of the Lexicon/Celmo example I used.
