A place to talk about whatever Scope music/gear related stuff you want.

Has anyone tried to emulate Windows 98 through XP Pro? I have some unique sequencing software that I must use 98 to execute. If this can sucseed, can I then make a copy of emulation and store it as a dual boot configuration?

if you refer to M$'s VirtualPC then I'd expect the sequencer software itself to run without problems.

The critical point is the 'real-world' hardware access of the emulated OS, which is mostly faked, so a Scope card isn't even visible.
If that sequencer is supposed to do high quality audio it will fail most likely fail (they have a standard Soundblaster support), but USB and parallel ports are most likely accessible, so midi should work (unless there are 'programming tricks' included which try to access hardware directly).

The emulated OS will run parallel to XP which acts as a 'hosting application'. As W98 doesn't need much resources (memory) this should be fine.

Another (more standard) way would be a dual boot configuration by HyperOS 2004

cheers, Tom

Some software doesn't work even in the compatibility mode - the old tripleDAT, older versions of encore (a big score editor) and others. Here you have to use the real win98.

Well, Well,
A question well answered. You see, I'm afraid to mess with a stable set up,but I purchased this old software for transferring SMF to MC-500MkII, and vice-versa, it works great but I was hoping to use it on my Scope computer without running a dual boot configuration. While I'm playing live it won't be used at all, it's only for conversional use. But the MC-500MkII will be running my ancient JL Cooper MIDI Light board, so this I can do w/o all that, but a DJ I am in Pre-Production with now wants to use the Roland, instead of Logic/Kyma rig, for stability reasons. I had such good luck in the '80's with QX-1, and MC-500MkII, I prefer to use hardware sequencer and just run MIDI into Scope/GS3 for some automation of presets and FX, and maybe a couple of symphonic passages that can't be played live.
So I guess I will go to Microsoft website and do some research. Thank you Gentlemen for the usual prompt and informative replies.,
