so my girlfriend asked me to help her buy a laptop. im not up to date with the computer world these days. she needs it for her universety degree, her field is marine biologi, she will need it for general research, statistic, analyzing etc. Frome time to time she is out at sea gathering information and doing tests, so it neds to be ok built, maybe not like a tank, but it needs to handle enviroments rougher than ur local coffe shop.

and as always budget is tight

iv looked into dell and web computer stores , but im not shure what im looking for.

So if any1 can help, have suggestions or relevant info that would be great.

thanks

Thermos.

You could do much worse than get a Sony Vaio.

I've got a 14.1" one which is my development machine at work. Sounds dinky, but the screen is excellent (Sony's 'x-black' technology) and has a display resolution of 1400x1050!

The keyboard is a gem too, lovely to type on.

My particular model is a VGN-B1XP.

And there is both Ferrari and Lamburgini - wouldn't that be nice?

The Sony Vaio might be the one to go for if money wasn't an issue. On a tight budget where raw power isn't essential there is just no beating Dell at the moment. You'll a decent spec Celeron powered Dell laptop brand spanking new for £299 online. That's 426.303 euro

Panasonic offers ruggedized laptops with titanium cases. But be prepared do pay extra for it.

Grid should be appropriate - not sure if they are still in business...
probably eBay would be more appropriate in this case anyway
one of their earlier models served to build the movement detector in Alien(1)

cheers, Tom

Silly arela, car is not laptop!

Just get her an etch-a-sketch with built-in "AutoCAD" software:
