Since I've a few days off over new year I thought I'd give Cubase another try (I usually live in AcidPro 3). Everything is wired up fine, I can record and playback midi with no problems, but what I really want to do is compose midi parts then immediately export to audio.
Funny thing is that when I export audio I get a big fat wav file (of various sizes) but it is completely empty - no waveform at all.
When I try the same thing with VST instruments it exports perfectly.
I'm wired up for ASIO using the BugMixer exactly as shown in the manual. I'm sure I must just have some parameter unchecked, but which one ?
cheers & happy 2002

Did you match bitdepth or apply dither?
Does is sound right if you turn off direct monitoring, but still monitor? Does the VST mixer clip when monitoring?
Euh... you did record the audio from the midi tracks (of external gear)? Or only the midi part?
Internal audio, VSTi and Rewire instruments can be mixed down.

Have you thought about trying Fruity Loops?
It supports VST, DXi and Buzz machines and automation of just about everything in it. The full version with lifetime updates is really cheap and they keep adding cool features every few months.
I usually prepare my tracks in Fruity and export them to Acid Pro 3 for the final mixdown and mastering.

Atomic, what you said about parts and tracks sounded significant but I don't understand the difference between the part and the track...
And just to be absolutely clear, reasure me that you can just record midi into a VST track then click on "export audio" and presto, a lovely stereo wav from your Pulsar synth awaits ?
And I did consider Fruity Loops a few months ago and asked for opinions on Planet Z - and mostly got a chorus of laughs...

Do you think Fruity is easier for loop making than Acid Pro or Sound Forge? Because what I'm really after is the easiest way to create loops of Pulsar basslines (from the Arpeg02) and drums (from ModV2). I'll then drop the loops into Acid. At the moment I'm doing just about everything in Acid but I feel there should be an easier way. The different packages I'm considering for this job are:
- Acid (for everything!)
- STS3000 (sample and cut in Pulsar, but uses DSP)
- Sound Forge (But I've got an old version...)
- Cubase (having problems as described above)
- Fruity Loops....(have to buy it!)
Any opinions much appreciated.

Hmmmm.... the plot thickens. Now I read here (near the end):

that it is NOT possible to "export audio" of Pulsar from Cubase ! Does this mean that XTC mode is the only way - and is anyone doing it that way ?
Does anyone "export audio" of Pulsar midi tracks from ANY sequencer ? Is it possible ?
cheers,
Spirit

The way to do this usualy is to record into Logic or Cubase, or wavelab, if you don't have logic, or SoundForge... Using Asio2 Destination for recording an audio track in Logic or Cubase, or Wav Dest, for recording in SoundForge or wavlabs...
Using FruityLoop you would sequence and play everything, including aautomation, and effects & synth of pulsar using Asio2, and recording the mix of this in SoundForge or Wavelab thru the Wave driver.
You can recording all Synth in wav, then put them in a track in fruity, then remove those snth a put more, that you can record also, and you can do this over and over...

Hmmmm yeah, but I can do all that in Acid, and a lot more easily. The advantage of the VST-export audio function would be that you could "paint" into the notes in whatever complex non-playable style you like, then export as a wav. Just recording straight to audio doesn't give you the same flexability....
