Syncing revisited...

I have two Behringer ADA8000s connected to my Pulsar II. I have one ADA8000 set to master and the Pulsar II and other ADA8000 both set to slave. Everything is synced up and working beautifully. At first, I tried slaving both ADAs to the Pulsar but, I don't see how it's possible (w/o a sync plate) since the Pulsar won't send a clock signal out both ADATs in parallel. I also don't see how it's possible to sync my SPDIF at the same time. The reason is that the few devices I have that use SPDIF only have outputs. That means I'd have to set the SPDIF device to master. Then I could slave the Pulsar and one ADA if Pulsar is capable of passing the signal from the SPDIF onto the ADAT A. Since it doesn't send the signal out both ADATs in parallel, I can never reach the second ADA. Is there something I'm missing here, or do I have to settle for 18 channels instead of 20.

You can't use ADAT and SPDIF at the same time.

nonsense.
there's no reason you can't sync it all to sp/dif. of course, you'll need 4 optical cables and both ada8000's need to be set to adat slave. other than that, there's absolutely no trick. i've done all that in the past.

Then maybe you can help me do it.

Clock path choices:

1) ADA8000#1(master)---->Pulsar II(slave)---->ADA8000#2(slave)

2) ADA8000#1(slave)<----Pulsar II(master)---->ADA8000#2(slave)

3) SPDIF(master)---->Pulsar II(slave)---->ADA8000#1(slave) & ADA8000#2(slave) in parallel

I'm using choice 1 and it's working fine. Choice 2 is not possible because the Pulsar II can't send the clock signal out both ADAT outs in parallel (as far as I can see). Choice 3 is the only way I could possibly interface the SPDIF device since it only has a SPDIF out -- it must be the master. Unfortunately, this choice isn't possible for the same reason as why choice 2 doesn't work. Once again, am I missing anything here? Is there a path I haven't figured out yet. Or is it just not possible given my setup to incorporate SPDIF?

no thats not true, you only have one source ofcourse
did you check the optical spdif option in your samplerate settings?

Hmm. I thought that option is for transmitting and receiving audio data in S/PDIF format over the ADAT A port? I'm using both ADAT ports for optical data already.

In order for me to sync all devices at the same time, the Creamware card would have to be able to accept the clock signal from the S/PDIF input and send this signal to both ADAT outputs simultaneously.

Does anybody here have two ADAs slaved to their Creamware card w/o using a sync plate?

Have you disconnected all digital connections apart from the ones you're trying to get talking?

I have my Pulsar (1) card hooked to an Alesis A/D/A converter in the first ADAT set and a PowerMac G5 in the second set. Pulsar is the master, and both devices can slave successfully to it. My Scope card, which is actually the master card, is hooked up to the PowerMac as well via ADAT and a TC effects processor via S/PDIF. Everything receieves a clock signal from Pulsar and Scope, and everything works great.

Thanks, Shayne. That gives me hope. So it seems that the Pulsar does in fact send it's clock signal out to all outputs. The only difference is, my S/PDIF device doesn't have an input, so it has to be the master. I'll try different combinations tonight.

IT WORKS! I don't know why it wasn't working before, but I'm currently listening to 20 tracks at the same time in my STM 2448! Everything is slaved to the S/PDIF. No clicks, no dropouts, it actually works!! Now it's time to make some music!
