Advice for PC rebuild

Hello all,

Over the holidays I let relatives use my PC for checking email... and now have a toolbar installed (spyware) and latency is worse. Stupid, I know.

I think it would be beneficial to do a complete re-install: O/S, Cubase, instruments, etc.

However, I am worried about the licenses and getting the software working again. Especially NI and Creamware

Any advice? Other alternatives???

Try to deinstall all programs which seem to be new and check carefully your msconfig.

Thanks for the insight.

I would hire someone (faster and less rick) but don't know my options. I'm just a hack (used to program PCs in the early 90s... hobbiest for music/indy films) -- day job is management consulting.

Has anyone had experience with http://www.geeksoncall.com ?

They probably don't have DAW expertise, but would have more experience with rebuilds. Maybe I'll have them get rid of the toolbar/spyware first and see if that fixes things, before a full rebuild.

If it's just some spyware or malicious programs you should be able to easily remove it with Lavasoft's Adaware personal & Spybot S&D. Adaware can detect and remove malicious registry entries very successfully. Check start /settings/Control Panel/Add or Remove programs. If you see any software installed here that you don't want, remove it. You can view your systems running processes & applications in real time if you press Ctrl+Alt+delete on you keyboard, which is the default shortcut for you XP's 'task manager'.

Recently I found my internet computer to be qute sluggish. I had a thought and installed all Anti-viruses to be found and scanned my computer with each one. Most anti-virus programs have a time limited FULL usage(like Kaspersky) so no problem there. I had a couple dialers in here. Also I got rid of that blasted Norton Protection Center service(found in XP services).

Silky slooth now without reformatting

edit: Forgot to mention all those other anti-virus programs were uninstalled after using them for that on scan.(Kaspersky even found a viral item in a restore point)

Regarding the virus in the restore-point-area: It is a wise thing to completeley turn of system restore, reboot, and then re-enable it again if you suspect virusses.
