Easy listening song

Post by LHong »

It is an instrumental sweet-song. Acoustic-piano, Guitar, Flute and String are giga-sample; the ana-string and other are pulsar-synths. Mixing is used pulsar/scope and Tascam technology.

Thanks for listening, all your inputs are greatly appreciated!

Edit: Re-Upload the MP3 song

Enjoy it!

Love the flute phrases that come and go.. I do that phrase alot with my mellow synth leads. :>
Great piano sound! But when the pianos hit chords, you might want to have each of nots come in at a slightly different timing (not as much as to make it strum) to break down the attack a bit. It's very tedious work.. that's why I don't do it. hehe.
Also, the piano strum that comes in right after the guitar solo is a bit off.. I think. Maybe a mistouch?

I'm listening again while taking a short break.. I don't think pitch bending the flute is working.. otherwise the flute sound is really good. Great sample. Flute and other woodwind is really hard... I used to play clarinet myself. Anyway, if you have lots of time on your hands, you might want to slur some of the notes using the pitch bend or with a quick, quick portamento. Or are you doing that already. (I'm going deaf.. oh no!)

And guitars... overdrive it, and then LCR delay it for a more uplifting effect. The usual basic treatment.. but it works.

Strings, great harmonization (wished I could do the same!), but over all it seems to have too much release time. The lower ends are overlapping a bit and they're mucking up the chord progression at certain points. Instead try lowering release on the sample, and send the strings to a wet, wet reverb with a highpass. Then you get long releases without muddy lows, while still having the dry low keep the harmony alive. The dry/wet balance is the trick! You get LOTS of space that way too.

Ah, I hear a steel string guitar too. You might want to bring him out a bit more. Are you highpassing it? He needs a bit more mid lows. You can also try sending just the mid lows to a reverb and blend that with the dry high end. But that gives it a roomy feel so if you're going for a huge soundspace, then it might not work. Huh.. now that I think of it, I think I should put some steel guitars in my song too. (call me copy cat, hehe)

Oh well, just a few points I noticed. I'm trying to compose somthing very similar, but much simpler in structure.. like 3 of these today and I gotta mail them tomorrow! Yikes! Your song keeps me on track. :>

Thanks Ken on another review, I'm glad that you like it!

I agree with you about the guitar/harp, but it could be a trade-off since we also have low-strings and pianos in the background...It might be changed its personality?
The flute's pitch-control was functional correctly at many places of course! (time: 00:37~00:50, for example)

The strings are the most of difficult parts, they are in orchestral-section layers, which also be required a lot of detail works in scoring and mixing as well like Velocity and Expression must be controlled at realtime-mixed dynamically. And of course with better sample sources would help a lot (not only reverb and/or Acoustic-room-simulator). Otherwise, we could simply get un-wanted metalic/harmonic sounding results (un-natural) due to the quality of DSP/FX-Effect-processing (where is the artifact limitation).

Thanks for sharing this, it just makes me feel better! Could you share this song with us as well whenever it'll be done?

Have fun,
Long
