anyone cares to explain this a bit? a few weeks ago someone sent me a mail in which he mentionned a new email address (@gmail). i'm relocating in a few months and don't know what will happen with internet and mail...

Biggest difference between gmail and hotmail is that gmail has 1 GB inbox. You can get the same at walla.com since long time, but since half a year or so also google offers such email adresses. You need someone with an existing gmail adress to 'invite' you for one.

Also, gmail offers the option to search on the web and in your mailbox. Quite interesting when you get a lot daily reports from user groups etc that go on the same subject you search on. For example, using gmail I can search agnula website and their mailing list at once, the website being a bit out of date and the mailing list containing the latest info.

Oh, and I doubt gmail would spy on you like the spamming account of hotmail

M$ doesn't make it a secret they log all your activity on their services.

Another big difference is that gmail has the option to use it with a popmail so that you can use outlook with it. They even have a setup utility.

don't be so sure.....
there have been nasty rumors about that on the local tech talk show here. nothing i can sustantiate, but i suspect a google search might.

My provider offers free mail boxes with similar sizes here
1GB max and a message 10MB

or

256MB max but 20MB for one message. This is the best free email I know because it has almost NO ads.

Or here, a popular one but also very popular in spam business

so many users have the domain blocked

I thought (from my experience) every provider offers popmail. And all of my previous and today free acounts have a setup utility.

Hotmail doesn't do POP as far as I know.

I just checked hotmail. They do not offer pop mail unless you subscribe to their premium services.
