i've been thinking about getting a decent Mic Pre-amp for some time now and the one i have put to the top of the pile is the not too expensive Toft ATC-2. It also has a nice EQ and Compressor and is designed by Malcolm Toft who did the old Trident studios' desks; the EQ is based on a classic Brit desk design.

Although my primary use is to record with a decent mic, i am also going to try my mixes through it to see what it adds and i thought it could also be suitable for you needs. Worth demoing at least and it's quite a bit cheaper that a pre-amp of comaparable quality. RRP is £799, but i've seen them at Digital Village for £699 (i would say comparable products would cost £1500).
