Clock master in complicated system (by Jani)
I have Pulsar 1, Elektra, TC M-One in Pulsar S/PDIF loop and Pod Pro in Elektra S/PDIF in. I'm concidering buying Fostex VM200 and connecting it to the Pulsar ADAT loop. Is this going to work? Which of the five should be mastering the whole system? How about if I get an ADAT board for my Korg TR-Rack, can I connect it to the other Pulsar ADAT and still be able to use all the equipment together? What about adding a DAT in Elektra S/PDIF out?

In order for your adat device to transfer into the pulsar properly you would have to slave its clock source to your master clock (the same clock your pulsar is slaved to), either with its onboard bnc clock input or if it has an adat in and you can set it to sync to an external clock via adat in. Now I don't know if the piece you want to add the adat adapter to has these features or not, the point of my response is this- if all your gear(including pulsar) is slaved to the same master clock all your equipment that connects to the pulsar via adat light pipe will transfer there signals great, how-ever to transfer into a pulsarI spdif input your pulsarI must be set to slave to that spdif input. The newer boards have a sample rate convertor on their spdif inputs and so they don't have the same limitation as the pulsarI's. The reason why other respondee's brought up the ticking issue was that connecting external effects to a pulsarI's spdif loop,generally has not worked and has been the subject of countless (really alot) posts. I think that someone might have said minutes instead of seconds on accident.

So can I slave Pulsar to the Pod in the Elektra in and let everything else sync to Pulsar? As the Pod is connected only to the S/PDIF in of the Elektra it cannot be synced to anything else. Will the ADATs sync to this setup?
If I buy the sync plate does that solve my problems? I think the Pod and the VM200 have workclock inputs. Can the wordclock be divided to several devices?

In case you have many slave-devices (three~five or more), you might need BNC-Ext-wordclock Sync sources (syncplate), then you might buy or build the wordclock-distributor modules to supply all of the slaves, in order to get all sync together (from some electronic stores).
One problem at sometimes, very first time whenever you power-up the systems, it might be required the power-on in sequence order like master first then slaves.

I hope you know about the hardware SPDIF issue on Pulsar1 cards, you can't use the SPDIF input AND output at the same time, since Pulsar1 can't be slave and master at the same time. There is a hardware workaround implemented in "make 2" cards (everything but Puslar1 and Scope1 I think).
I'm not sure about the other gear, but sometimes other gear only works at certain samplerates, like "fixed 48Khz if mastering", or "slaves to any samplerate." You should check the manual for the master/slave options of each of your devices and decide what samplerate you want to work with. If you're doing CD audio, then it would be prefered to avoid the SRC from 48 to 44 as this can cause a nasty change in sound. Try to find a way to run the system at 44.1khz then...
Pulsar will work okay as master, just remember the SPDIF thing.

There is no problem using Pulsar 1 S/PDIF in and out simultaneously. I have my TC M-One in the loop as master and Pulsar as slave. This works sweet!

So you magically got your SPDIF i/O working. The problem is minor, so you may not notice it, it would be a small little pop or transient, every say, 7 or 14 minutes. If you're using a reverb, the transient will be "in the room" and you'll be able to hear it if there isn't a lot of noise.
I'm curious how you have the SPDIF setup on your Pulsar1 to get both the in and out working. What is master/slave in the Pulsar1<->M1 relationship?

I just said in my previous reply that THE M-ONE IS MASTER and PULSAR IS SLAVE. No snap, crackle or pop. Maybe I'm just darn lucky, my songs don't last seven minutes. Besides, do you think that a digital device gets tired? So it can go on for seven minutes and then it has to take a brake? When the snapping occures it does it once in few seconds, not in few minutes.

Sorry, written in a bad moment. Have you tried the S/PDIF loop thing with Pulsar 1 or what do you base your assumption on? When using M-One in the Pulsar loop and the PodPro in the Elektra S/PDIF in there is snapping every few seconds when one (can't remember which) of them is master. It works fine other way around.

If you have an external S/PDIF master, Pulsar can slave to it, and can master an ADAT interface device. I think you just can't reliably send S/PDIF data back to the S/PDIF master. You casn send it to an external slave device like a converter to output to an amp and stuff like that
