Hi,

I have recently bought a high spec Pakard Bell computer because i had tried building several computers in the past and had problems with temporary freezing. I have 2 cards, 1 is a Power Pulsar and the other is a Pulsar2. Everything was working fine for a few weeks when working with Reason 2.5 and using the whole rig as a slave to my Mac/Protools until I tried to add a module in Reason on the fly and it crashed.

Now when I boot up the Pulsar software keeps going into busy mode i.e. the curser keeps showing the egg timer every few seconds. This is the same problem I had with my previous computers. Would appreciate any ideas. Thanks

your computer is probably too 'high speced'
no kidding (or offence) intended - my personal interpretion of your story is that you also have tons of Ram and a huge disk cache active.
Now that small Reason accident happens, arbitrary memory locations get screwed up and the system flushes the whole mess (or parts of it) back to disk

It's like riding a fast bike - gorgeous as long as you keep track, but on the slightest mistake you ARE over the top...

not to forget system temperature may be an issue with your 21 DSPs, might even be the true source for the Reason failure

cheers, Tom

Because Windows is an Open platform where you can add things to it and modify the way it works, Crashes will happen soon or later. It is very unsafe to work without having back ups. So now you might need back ups or it could be a long process to get you up and going again.

Windows will slow down if:
1. your computer is experiencing memory leakage (A windows process will run and not stop until it uses all memory allocated to application)
2. some windows files are overwritten or corrupted
3. A driver has gone bad or corrupted by an action that was improper.
4. Or it could be any other thing that is unknown.

To fix it you want to:
1. Run scandisk to see if no orphan files or bad files have been dumped on the hard drive in a bad location. Search for bad clusters or bad sectors.
2. Try and re-install Applications that use sound or that is related to sound when Windows starts up or shuts down.
3. Some corrupted files do act like viruses sometimes, so you may want to run a virus check.
4. Try re-installing all your hardware drivers like soundcard, video card and any other device installed in the PC.
5. If all this don’t work then you want to check your OS (Operating System). I believe that company (Packard Bell) must have provided you with recovery disks. Use them and re-install Windows, after that tune it up and remove other features you don’t use. These features can interfere from good functioning of you music PC and cause unexpected errors.

Good Luck

Thanks for your replies, it seems to me that a PC running Windows is getting to be a waste of time and I should consider moving the whole lot over to a Mac. I have had no trouble with my Mac setup since I installed it 18 months ago but have had problems with windows since I started to use it for Music over 4 years ago. Thanks again for your help!
