Hi,
Just in case anyone is interested - Below is an AMD motherboard with 2 x PCI slots -X370 chipset & PCI-e GEN 2 for the slots but 2 x PCI slots that will work with the 3rd gen AMD CPU's such as 3700 X / 3800 X / 3900 X.
A benchmark from CPU benchmark with a very high score for an 8 core CPU

I couldn't say no to one of these boards - but I won't get the CPU for a year or so and it'll be a lot cheaper.
Boards are on Amazon UK - (maybe elsewhere)_not checked - - Just worth a mention in case anyone is interested, if not forget I mentioned it ! -
AMD CPU's
Re: AMD CPU's
Just to add a little more - a benchmark for the AMD 3900 X 12 core -
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cp ... 0X&id=3493
And to have a look at the league table as it were - !!! - for AMD vs Intel Hi-End = With the 3900 X currently in top spot so when ever the 3950 X arrives which is 16 core it'll be even greater performance for those who need it -
I needed to pinch myself when I saw this as with the mega-expensive 7980 XE 18 core Intel and other expensive Xeons underneath !!!
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html
I'm not knocking Intel as they're proven better with low latency recording and more instances of Kontakt instruments etc.......but to think an AMD X370 motherboard above could use on of these.
The PCI card folks may like this !!! - Especially if there are sample libraries and VSTi / native fx -

Re: AMD CPU's
This is the board I was talking about - If anyone does buy one of these boards, the 3rd GEN 3700 X would be the most the board could handle properly as it's rated at 65 W (maybe 3800 X ).
Whilst it has 2 PCI slots which is useful for us the technical aspects of the board (current handling) are limited compared to other boards

Thanks fraz!
Just a reminder that for audio work, regardless of AMD or Intel, Faster cores > More cores. 3700X gets my vote

Re: AMD CPU's
OK, but the 3900 X 12C/24T does have exceptional single threaded performance according to the reviews but the Asus Prime X370-A is limited in what it can handle from the VRM / current handling point of view.
If the numbers below are true and correct then a 12C/24T wouldn't cause any problems from the CPU side of things

Re: AMD CPU's
>>>It was possible to get some IVY BRIDGE XEON E5 CPU's - cheaper than i5's - Example E5_1680_V2 (think early version 5960X)___standard clocks of this Xeon are 3.0 Ghz >>>>>Now I learned to overclock >>> it was possible to get 4.2 Ghz (all cores)__@__1.150_v_core or there abouts with temperatures of 56 C on the hottest core with a big__ish__air_cooler.
This shows it is possible to get very good performance at good temps with older CPU's but its a hassle to OC but in some cases like above it is the best way to go
