SPL Transient Designer/Attacker (alternate use)
SPL Transient Designer/Attacker (alternate use)
I've put these to use in an alternate fashion lately finding their use on drums a bit extreme and invasive on the original sound.
If you are happy with how the drum hits (i.e. kick, snare, toms) sound and you are only worried about bleed, I find the Attacker and alternatively the TD, invaluable as a side-chaining tool.
Consider a PEQ4 -> Attacker-stage (fully CW and attenuated not to clip) side-chaining an Expander -> Vinco-stage i.e.
Attacker virtually eliminates any bleed and thus giving you a nice trigger for your gate/expander and compressor. The side-chained compressor stage really brings out the drum hits and you will be surpriced on how little post-EQ you might require, if any at all.
Important! Don't forget to delay your processed drum-hit by +40 samples as a look-ahead to protect your transients. The TD i.e. introduces a 40 sample delay.
Likewise, all drum tracks in the mixer should be delayed to preserve phase-relations.

I would love a routing window jpeg of that.
Those plugs are on a short list.

You and your pictures ..
ot as pretty as 5.0, but here goes. A current picture from that post-metal project.

Thanks BuddyBuddy...
I was more interested in the routing than the device jpegs but having both was total Coolness................ankyu.
When I started recording drum tracks into VDAT and using those live I learned how to SideChain and I was shocked how the instruments playing live mixed with the recorded tracks and sounded quite realistic thanks the SideChainbg vocals over cymbals, Kick over 5 String and Synth basses.
I gotta get the SPL stuff.
These tips are very useful can't wait tio try them...................Ankyu.............

My pleasure.
The settings are obviously just in the ball park. It all depends on the tracking.

I'm glad to have it ! It impacts a lot of good character on some sources and saves a lot of work.
I wish we had more "character" devices like these for the system. I could technically build some myself, but I think I am a bit in the dark about the workings.

What's cool about the few I have is they all have certain places.
I love Tube Taper, DAS Legend, SpaceF Fat's, MCCY's SatEQ, and the ancient Shroomz ECC thingy.
Tupe Taper has 2 versions just like the FAT's which is great for Mono synths and Kicks.
These type of effects SideChained are great as they expand and contract.
I don't know how these developers made these all sound so different. But they are addicting.
It seems like once you start using them in a mix, it ain't fair just raising the volume of another track, you have to add one of the above.

Re: SPL Transient Designer/Attacker (alternate use)
Thanks for this tip voidar, totally makes sense.
I wonder how one can calculate the sample delay of a certain fx module. Is there a sort of sample delay calculator to apply on any device that I'm not aware of?
Thanks again!
cheers Darcy

What's the SD800-S - is that what you use to delay? Where's it from?
Re: SPL Transient Designer/Attacker (alternate use)
Guilty. It's a stereo 0-800 sample delay I made a couple of years ago.Mr Arkadin wrote:What's the SD800-S - is that what you use to delay? Where's it from?
Re: SPL Transient Designer/Attacker (alternate use)
Most devices introduce no sample delay at all though they might be displaced onto different SHARCs which will cause a 1-2 sample delay.ChampionSound wrote:Thanks for this tip voidar, totally makes sense.

The SPL stuff has a 40 sample delay or so, give or take. You can use my free device Parallizer to manually test devices.
I plan on updating Parallizer soon.
I just today discovered how awesome the Impressor is. It can be configured as an expander and I feel it works better than the stock one; smoother and more control. Impressor also has look-ahead which replaces the SD800 in the project.
Also really great 2buss compressor.
Can't believe I haven't used it before.

I use TubeTaper on every mix, on low settings. Doesnt need much but a great FX.I am glad you are using my device " Tube taper" !!
