It SHOULD be general knowledge that NEVER open ANY attachments which come from untrusted (anyone you don't know for sure) sources. Neither open attachements that come from known sources but the message seems weird (different language than usual or so).
And finally, even when the source is trusted, and you are sure that (s)he really meant to send that given attachement, you can ask if (s)he could send the info as txt
