Is there a workaround to get the oldskool .mdl modII-patches into the modern .dev shape (with new preset list, autosave) or do you have to program it again from the scratch?

Look at the empty modular.dev or .mdl as a container in which you drop modules.

You'll have to rebuild the modules setup inside a new container.dev and IMO maybe the old presetlist from the container.mdl can be imported.
