Based on the readings of countless posts on this forum from very helpful users, I hand built a DAW based around a Creamware system for a good friend of mine.
I posted most of this on cubase.net in response to questions there, so I'm pasting a bit here...
I had a budget of $1800 total:

for $1750 I built a DAW for a close friend of mine who didn't have a computer until now. He currently has my legal copy of VST/32 5.1 which I will let him use until he can afford the $599 for SX (aren't I a nice guy?), but for kicks, I installed SX the night I built it here to "take it for a spin".
God lord, on a high spec Intel system, SX really shines. Makes me want to cry going back to my P3 800 box (which I *was* still happy with until now).
for $1750, he got:
P4 2.0ghz - Northwood
Asus P4B266-C
512mb PC2100 DDR ram
2x 60gb IBM 120gxp drives
G550 Matrox
40x Plextor cdrw
2x 17" CRT's
WinXP Pro
Creamware Luna II card
Keyboard, mouse, all that crap.
This box SMOKES! And to think it's his first damn audio computer!! He had a really strict budget of $1800 and that was MAX, otherwise I really would have pushed for a rdram setup, but it's still kickin' it hardcore.
He has no idea how good he's got it...
*sigh*
Back to my "old" DAW.

I will (hopefully) soon build a rdram based P4T-533 box (minus the Luna2 card as I have a Pulsar II now) to replace my current setup.
His system is incredible. Right "out of the box", installed SFP 3.1a and it's running like a champ. None of this could have been done without you guys!
