Hi all,

Does anyone use Control Freak with Pulsar as a controller?

I'm setting up a profile for Miniscope on my Freak, but I can't work out how to save the midi controller settings in the Miniscope in some more permanent way. The midi controller settings don't seem to be saved with the preset.

Can anyone help me here?

hi Caleb,

imho they are saved with the device and that's of greater practical use.
Or do you need separate fader assignments for different presets instead of one assignment for the complete surface ?
Btw. when verifying this, I grabbed the next best synth from the list which turned to be the Lo-Fi from Wavelength. Another SID soundalike and well suited for your studies with clean user interfaces.
Fiddling with the midi/lfo arpgeggiator leads to some surprising similiaritis...
cheers, Tom

Thanks Astroman.

I've actually used Lo-Fi for a song before. I didn't find it amazingly versatile, but it certainly was refreshingly weird.

I would use it again.

I didn't actually really understand what you meant by saving it with the device. Do you mean, when you have a project and you save it the assignments are saved with it?

If so, that's cool but it means that I have to assign all the relevant knobs everytime I put one of the synths in a project. By the time I've assigned the knobs, I could have probably created the sound I was looking for.

Sorry, I might not have understood your advice. Could you clarify?

i have problems with assigning and deleting cc's, their slowing down of preset load times especially on the modular. and no i don't like how cc's are saved with the device.

what you can do, to get around this "feature" is have pulsar project folders and keep your saved unique cc assigned devices in there.

that way you don't have to mess around assigning different cc's to the same device all the time.

the way i like to work is assign all relevant and usefull parameters to a cc for each device, but i ran into the problem of slower and slower preset load times with increasing numbers of cc's assigned.

i don't do a whole lot of automation work, so i just deal with setting cc's on a per project basis for the main device(s) in question.

grumble grumble, maybe this got fixed in later os's, i'm still running 2.52...cw hasn't gotten back to me after i mailed them about this preset load time problem. i can get around it, no prob...

adieu.

hi Caleb,

yes, you misunderstood, but no prob, step by step:
right click on the control, in midi setup box enter new value, click 'midi +' and close. Prolly you already did this for all controls you want to automate.
Open the familiar 'Preset' box of the device
Click the disk symbol with 'Device' on top of it. Question 'Are you shure you want to save bla, bla...' appears.
Click 'Yes' and next time you include this device in a project it got all controllers assigned.
Hope this was what you intended

cheers, Tom

Thanks Astroman! I'll try that.

And thanks for the link too Atomic. You mean you went and found that from September last year? Wouldn't it have been quicker to type it out again?

I think this is what I was looking for. I'll let you know if I have any more problems.

Caleb,
I use the Control Freak (16 channel one) too but I haven't saved the Miniscope yet (too many knobs, too littel time!)
However, I have lots of other devices saved (EZ Synth, INferno, 303, Sample Players F etc, if they are of any use to you.
I could send you the devices and the sysex control freak files to save you time (swap for your miniscope one?)
I have most in 2.04 and some of the version 3 ones done. Any use? Any help?

Wow Neil. That sounds pretty cool. We could keep each other up to date.

I'll send you an email later about it OK?

If we do it in a sensible manner (and I must warn you, I have no idea what that is at this point), then maybe we can start posting them for all Pulsar/Scope users to download freely.

Sound like a plan to you?

Sounds good to me Caleb,
Which Freak have you got?
Have you got the Freak Software on your pc too? Kenton have a link to it.
I'm at work at the moment and I tend to check my emails at home every other day, so if you are in a hurry let me know on this thread - I read it every weekday.

I've got the Freak Studio Edition with the 16 faders. And I've got the software...somewhere.

I haven't set it up to receive midi from my computer. I'll have to set it all up I guess.

BTW,
I'm only a slider person - ain't gotten into the buttons yet on the Freak.

God Atomic - I only read the first part of that thread.

No it's not possible to save controller assignments in the newer devices because they've actually removed the save with device functionality.

*GASP*

I can't believe they'd take such a backward step!

This is about as disappointed as I've been thus far with the Pulsar. I hope it's addressed with 3.1 but somehow - I doubt it has been.

I'm going to have to go somewhere and get over this now.

Yeah,
Bummer eh?
But you can still use 2.04 devices (synths etc) in V3 projects so the Control Freak is still an asset if you don't need the extra bits of V3 synths. The pain is re-attaching all your program changes to the patches!

I'm going through the agony of setting up a massive template project with many synths in it all with controllers assigned and all with polyphony at zero so they don't impact DSP usage much (if at all). Then I have a nice default composer's project.

I'm not sure how this will work, but we'll see.

GRRRRRR again for not allowing saving with the device (although there probably was a good reason for it I suppose).
