HI,
is it possible to use optical ADAT IN as Optical S/PDIF IN (with Pulsar I and 3.01 SW) ?
I need export some audio from my SONY MiniDisc Deck, but this deck has only optical out (not coaxial S/PDIF out).
Thanks
Peter

Yes it is possible.
However, there's 2 main differences between Pulsar1 and Pulsar2 SPDIF:
-Pulsar1 cannot slave to SPDIF
-Pulsar2 used different devices (SPDIF and SPDIF optical) in the project for optical/coax SPDIF.

But how to do it ?
I tried to switch S/PDIF mode in Settings (instead of ADAT) but no signal came from Sony to Pulsar.
What devices and virtual I/O I must use ?

afaik, the sony must be able to sync to pulsar optical.hosa technologies makes a cheap(about $70 u.s.)box to convert optical to coax spdif.you could then use pulsar coax in.(that'd be easier)

Or if your handy with a solering ion, you could make one yourself for a fraction of that cost.

Yes, I know converting optical to coax (for example MIDIMAN CO2). But I was interested in possibility to use Pulsar ADAT as optical S/PDIF without needing any other convertors.
So once again, is it possible with PULSAR I and SW 3.01. Because in settings this option is.
Thanks

Can you connect Pulsar to your external gear? The external gear, connected to SPDIF optical, needs to be slaved to Pulsar1. See that device's manual for doing so.
In such a digital audio system, you need audio clock.
Open Pulsar's Samplerate View, set to 'Optical SPDIF'. Now load a 'Pulsar SPDIF Source' into your project. Connect it to the mixer and play...
Cos Pulsar1 cannot be SPDIF slave.

I am a bit in the same situation.
Can Luna2 slave to spdif?

Yes, luna is a 2nd generation card, no problem with it....

So, If I understood good, with Pulsar I, is not possible to use ADAT IN as optical S/PDIF IN.

it is also possible to use ADAT out as an optical SPDIF out??
i have a minidisc with digital input, but i don't have optical spdif out (no, i don't want to build coax to optical converter

!!)

Yes, you can use SPDIF optical on the ADAT ports for Pulsar1.
I said w PulsarII it's a different .dev we have to load to choose from optical SPDIF/coax SPDIF.
Pulsar1 doesn't make a difference, it's just called 'SPDIF source' or 'SPDIF dest'. No matter wheither you use optical or coax cable, for the .dev.
BOTH PulsarI & II need correct setting on SampleRate View, which deceides how the hardware IO is going to behave: As SPDIF or as ADAT.

of course, most devices w/optical or coax sp/dif will NOT slave to another device.

It looks like you guys talk about something different that is on Peter's interest: Almost 90% of my time spent with Pulsar 1 it is slaved to my Yamaha A3000 sampler with no problem - using the optical connection. It all was possible only after installing the so called Pulsar 1 s/pdif patch (you can find it on CW's site in download section). So Peter, try to d/l this patch and connect your ol'minidisc to your card using a dedicated wire and everything should be ok. After making all connections you should do preparations in the 'samplerate settings: optical s/pdif and turn Pulsar to 'slave' mode.

I don't know exactly: perhaps in the situation where there is only Pulsar 1 in a system it is not possible. In my case (Luna II + Pulsar 1) slaving to Pulsar 1 IS possible.

Thank you SAMPLAIRE so much. It really works (with Pulsar SLAVE mode).
Should I have problems with running Pulsar in slave mode ? I want to use minidisc as extrenal AD/DA, to have together with Pulsar 4 analog I/O.

Well of course most devices like MD, DAT, etc, don't like slaving, they require to be master.
Would I trust my DAW to the digital clock of a $100-200 miniDisc? No way! Maybe for transfering stuff off the miniDisc, but not as a permanent solution. There are differences in digital clocks, listen very closely on your studio monitors and it should be clear. There are reasons studios pay $1500 for Aardvark AardSync devices to clock all their digital gear, there is a difference in sound quality to be sure.

The precision of the clock effects everything coming out of your system. Hopefully you have a really strong set of batteries in your MD

Also I would be careful about using the MD for serious recording, as some MDs convert at a different sample rate than their digitial output works at, resulting in everything going through a Sample Rate Conversion which can also wreak havoc on your sound. Of course, try it out, it might be fine for your purposes...

this topic is interesting; just 2 hours ago I was trying to connect my Laptop with a DSP Hammerfall Card from the hammerfalls ADAT Out to the ADAT In of Pulsar I; I was thinking maybe I could route the digital and cleaner digital audio-signal of the laptop-generated vst-synths to my PC Audio-workstation (pulsar I, luna II, luna-breakoutbox) and record there in logic platinum 4.8.1 the vst-synth in realtime as a wave-file.
Is this possible anyway ? Thanks a lot.
