few days ago i get new mashine: p4-2.2, p4t-e and 1gb rambus. instalation of win98se goes smooth as usual, but when i try to instal drivers for mobo and video card starts real win98se instalation hell.
everything what i tried to do results with crashings, blue screens, and i was able to open windows only in safe mode!
then i call friend and he told me that's only way to force win98 to work with more than 512mb memory is to set cache in system.ini:
[vcache]
MinFileCache=8192
MaxFileCache=8192
ChunkSize=8192
(this is for 1gb)
after this everything works fine - 3 days without any problem :smile:
i usualy set this, but i didn't now that if don't do this then win98se/1gb rambus can't work.
btw: he also told me that is good to set in system.ini:
[386Enh]
CONSERVATIVESWAPFILEUSAGE=1

can somebody comment this, please. it can be helpfull for others, because i had very bad and frustrated experience!

Your friend is correct.

it even says something on microsoft website about using more than 512 megs on win98 and that is the fix.

you can set the minfilecache and maxfilecache to higher amounts. you will loose a bit of HDD speed with the setting you have. try 32 or 64 megs.
(32768 or 65536)

1024/4=256
256x1024=262144 ????
and what about ChunkSize?!?!

I do not think you need to use that much of your memory, in fact it might be bad in a DAW application

I think it would be best to set the chunksize to whatever is the blocksize of your hard drive

is it called blocksize? i forget

Win98/se/me will handle no more than 512MB of RAM propperly - unless you assign the extra for VCACHE in your case this means 524288 - ahh, I found my old link on my harddrive -> http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb ... SD=SO&FR=0

aaaaaaaaa, too much strange words and numbers for my brain on this site! :wink: finaly: how much i must set?!
Min/MaxFileCache=?
ChunkSize=?
thanks!! :smile:
btw: now i have 262144 and working all day without problem. if you know that will be better with another setting, i will do change?!

you could probably tweak a couple of percent here and there but it is probably not worth the bother. if it is working well than it is good.
