For my motherboard ASUS CUSL2 with chipset Intel 815 there are some special Intel drivers that I thought was really good for the PCI bus. But now I read on Infinite Vortex site/ Optimizing your Win9x PC for Audio:

No, of course not. It must be the bus to the diskdrives were talking about.

To check what drivers you have, open Device Manager, go to IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. Go to it's drivers.

Update,
select 'from specific location',
select 'i will choose...'
choose Standard IDE drivers.

This is a walkthrough for XP, other WinOS' have similar options.
