15 DSP = 14 DSP ?

I'm owner of 14 DSP and 15 DSP cards.
The 15 DSP-card has a DSP soldered close to the pci bridge, while the 14 DSP has an empty socket on the pcb here.

Using scope 4.5 all cards are shown as 14 DSP.
Is there a reason for that DSP to be "hidden" ?

On those cards the DSP chip is (I believe, if memory serves) used to load core components of the "Scope Operating System" code that coordinates everything happens after. The chip was added to ease certain resource usage situations (again from memory, defer to gary on this) so that you had more of your declared DSP usage at your disposal.

Proposition: It was an improvement in the design because people became more aware of how the sync & async numbers lined up with device usage, and wondered where the 'extra dsp usage' was going on such an expensive card.

That sounds like there was a chip added later improving something.
Maybe I´m wrong,- but I think one of the chips was ditched later,- going from "Power Pulsar" (15DSP) to "Scope Pro" (14 DSP),- saving costs and when it was possible to get same results,- possible by optimized software,- no ?

I also remember, earlier 15DSP cards were "gen #1" cards w/ 3 ADAT I/Os,- while "gen 2" cards w/ only 2 ADAT I/Os might have been fine w/ 15 and 14 DSPs onboard.
I own one of these "gen2" 15 DSP cards going down to less than 13ms of ASIO latency already (7ms ULLI @44.1K SR).
It has the "Classic20" plate" w/ just "only" 2 ADAT I/Os.
I understood, 15DSP cards w/ 3 ADAT I/Os were the "gen #1" cards.

Ah you're correct, I recalled it in reverse. Thanks Bud

3x ADAT i/o were available with gen2 cards.

14 and 15 dsp cards are more or less equivalent. removing a dsp saved money, but didn't affect performance, so....
the 15th dsp was mainly used for card management.

I'm amazed, we found an error in my memory. I must not be uploaded into the VR sim yet after all.

So, ULLI is the only indicator ?

@44.1K SR

13ms = Gen #1
7ms = Gen #2

or are there more attributes ?

the cards are different shapes, but unless you have cards to compare, it's hard to tell. date of production might also tell, but ULLI and PCI capacity are easy tells.
