I got very confused recently when working on a big patch as the way in which the cables were getting coloured seemed inconsistent - same connections would sometimes be given different colours.

I eventually worked out that the colour of a cable is determined by which end you connect first.
Connecting a blue socket to a green one gives you a blue cable, but connecting a green socket to a blue gives you a green cable.

Luckily, there is also a way to change colours if this happens:
Select the cable and right-click. You can now choose which colour you want the cable to be.
