Volume drop on PSY-Q with Softclip off

Been testing PSY-Q today with the new upgrade I purchased yesterday. Noticed that when Softclip is turned off the volume drops about 3db from nominal. Is this some sort of safety mechanism so it doesn't clip?
I tried countering this with a +3 boost on the output but that's post bypass for some reason so it makes it difficult to a/b. I guess you have to keep softclip on and just make sure it's not actually clipping.
