Basic Monitoring Question / feedback - Scope

Hi,
Just been recording an input from a CD player into Scope via the ADAT A source modules in my project - It could just as easily been a hardware keyboard.
Got some audio recorded no probelm but do have a question about feeback - On Cubase 6 on an audio track there is a little button/switch for monitoring which I pressed and got a horrible noise thru the speakers -- obviously this is feedback of some sort but I don't understand exactly what has happened which is why I ask here....
.......very basic question I know but one that needed asking.....
btw.....
I do have another audio interface which is more basic on another PC seperate to Scope and I've done the same with a more basic version of Cubase and I monitored the signal without any bad noise/feedback.....though the Edirol isn't as nice as my Scope ........
