Sonar glitches

hi folks,
well, i finally consolidated my PI & PII cards in my main XP pro box, (32bit) getting back (very slowly) to my beloved musical hobbies.
i can't quite audition the output yet; the system seems to be working fine. I have an onboard sound "card" called SoundMax, but I don't seem to be able to route the Pulsar output to this device using the "Sound Card Dest" module. I assume those are only for 3rd party PCI "soundblaster" type things ... ?
Main problem right now is getting Sonar working. The sample rate settings in Scope are 44.1. I try to play audio in Sonar, and I get "Unable to open audio playback device ... may not support project's audio format, or may be in use". I'm using a 44.1 / 16 bit stereo file. It plays fine in Cubase & Audacity.
I have in my "startup" project window, 6 wave drivers (sources), an ASIO source, and a 7th Wave Driver (24bit), to experiment with. Oddly enough, when I choose Creamware Play/Rec 7 as my Sonar track output, it does play, even tho the wav file is not 24 bit.
if anyone could give any pointers on this, it would be much appreciated. I'd like to learn Cubase & ASIO (someday) but SONAR is my true & trusted comfort zone at this point.
gracias,
Gary
