I read somewhere on the boards before that this can be done from within scope with a decent spectrum analyzer like wolf's but I'm not to sure how to go about setting up a test. From the research I've done it seems that I should be sweeping across a range of frequencies using white noise and any peaks would indicate room resonance. Is my understanding correct? IOf I have a mike setup in my normal listening position and run such a test then it would hopefully go some way to correcting any anomolies that my boxy room throws up. There is at present some high end resonance I am aware of and idealy I guess I should really think about some kind of room treatment but I wanted to check this route out first. Any help greatly appreciated.

The best and cheap way is RoomEQ and a Behringher ECM 8000 measurement microphone.

why do you need a special mic? isnt a normal mic with flat freq response enough?... just had to ask

there's no such thing as a mic with flat response.
the mic needs to be a known, calibrated quantity....

In fact or you get the mic "coloration" on the room response!

Thanks for the links and advice. In light of what has been said it is probably a lot cheaper and far better solution for me to look into some room treatment rather than spend money on equipment to just figure out if I can patch up the sound.

yes, in particular if you suspect high frequency problems.
What may work on room modes in the bass domain, will probably require you'll fix your head within a < 1 inch position at higher frequencies.
