Overclocking w/ Scope

Well I finally got my buddy to show me some tricks tonight after a small bribe and payment for a babysitter.

It's not a DFI board but an Abit P45, but the trick was he moved his shelved Luna and Pulsar Project card back in to show me the benifits of overclocking an Intel Core 2 Duo X6800 w/ OCZ Flex DDRII 9200 RAM.

Overclocking the FSB does yield more instances of Masterverb from 14 to 18, and the real benefit I noticed was the sheer amount of polyphony from VSTi synths like Oddity, Zeta, and a great sounding Camel Audio Additive synth, and huge amounts of plugs. The Camel Audio synth is where VSTi's should concentrate their strengths instead of emulating analogs. They still don't come close to Scope, and are far from a real analog.

At any rate, the FSB seems to be the trick w/ low latency CL3 and CL4 settings, at a high FSB rate. The CPU was warm but this isn't even an issue w/ the O Stepping of a Wolfdale CPU.

I know that overclocking a CPU shortens it's life a little, but everything I saw tonight shows me that a jump in the FSB w/ low latency RAM just makes a DAW so much smoother, and I think I will tweak my board a little when I do this new build.

There are benefits w/ Scope it seems, but I will do this for the benefits of Bidule and VSTi synths.

Nice to know that Scope can run anywhere w/ anything. His RME card has pops and clicks at higher FSB settings, where the Scope cards have zero flucuation or jitter. :D

Have A Nice Weekend. :)

Last time I overclocked our Scope rig I fried a 400 dollar Quadra GFX card. :o

Sorry to hear about it. :(

I will be very careful as I will do all of the installs at stock speeds, then try this after everything is smooth.

The best thing about it is the RAM cost 400 USD when it was new, now the same 2GB sticks are 160 and fast as greased lightning.

BTW, how do you burn up a GPU ? I remember way back when overclocking was dangerous, a jump in the speeds was carried over the AGP and PCI bus, but those days are long gone. That was back in the BX chipset and Slot 1 days. Yeah I remember.....................1GHz Copperminne CPU's for 1000 USD. Dayamn. :x

BTW, XTreme Cut is way fun, thanks.

The Quadra's GPU fan decided to stop working & it just went pear shaped.

The performance was blistering fast while it lasted though.

at my work we have several people using dual quadro 4600s only 1 has failed so far. the machines have dual xeon quad core and 8 and 16 GB RAM

you must have been unlucky.

oh BTW! extreme cut is great :)

I think it was a 7500, but I'd need to dig it out & check (which I ain't going to do right now). I was obviously overclocking the GPU & it's ram at the time, so combined with all other factors it's not a surprise that something gave way (in retrospect anyway). The one thing to remember with overclocking seems to be not to get too cocky. :D

Actually, it was a few years back now & I honestly can't remember the model no', but it doesn't really matter since the issue wasn't related to Scope, but rather to my own stupidity.

Ah, don't pull my leg. That was just a joke. :D

I'll tell you what though Neutron: The more I've thought about it, the less like a joke it seems.
