VDAT

I am jumping into the truck and driving to San Francisco w/ a friend, so I haven't had the chance to see if this really works yet.

As in the picture of the project below, I have decided to allocate the tracks to share the channels in Wolf's 16 Channel Mixer.

When I go to record a stereo track into the VDAT's inputs 1 & 2, I only need to repeat that process and move the inputs to VDAT 3 & 4, 5 & 6, 7 & 8,....corrrect?

In this way I should hear the previous tracks recorded as I add more.

Oddly, I will record the left hand Bass parts simultaneously with synth parts, and then return to do the Drums. Then I will delete the Bass and keep the very rhythmic synth part, and add the Upright Bass. I retain the " live " feel that way.

VDAT should sound better than Reaper, or Cubase. This should allow me to dump my wav. files right into a converter and dump to 2 track, 'eh?

The mp3's should be finished before I drive back.

I usually fly, but prefer driving this time. Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, and the Sierra's are just as pretty in the winter, as they are in the spring.

I can pocket the cost of the flight also!! :D

Yes I often do my sampling this way.

Connect to the first 2 inputs, record stereo, stop vdat, rewind, connect the next 2 inputs, record, ....

So that should work fine. My audio editors will not load the wave files if vdat is still open and has a tape open which uses the wave files.

Hi Jimmy,

Yes, like the previous dude, I'd be surprised if you hadn't figured these things out within a minute of loading VDAT for the first time... it really is that simple!

Funnily enough, I was taking a dump at work today (as one does), and naturally we keep a load of back-issues in the bog (that's 'toilet', for the benefit of our american cousins). And guess what the leader was about?

How appropriate!

Dayamn !

That was perfect timing mate ! :D

I love to chat @ the Z while I'm travelling.

Just hooked my bro's laptop up, as I grow weary of wireless communications. I thought my iPhone was bad, but this wireless, slow ass shit bores me, and there's no Fast Forwarding it.

I got some great pics of Yosemite on the way up. On the way back I stop in Reno / Tahoe.

I was so busy getting my rig together and testing my strength ( weakness ) w/ new toys that I got to it at the last minute.

Thanks Guys 4 Getting The Confidence Factor 4 Me.

It's like my first recital.

Sorry,

We are currently taking turns for the laptop and must start in 45.

I am trying to get this working while I am at a gig.

I am discussing something in Scope, sorry for not providing you instant gratification Stardust.

Then again your snide remarks are of little help.

I have never opened VDAT until today, as my appoinment by phone happened just before I left.

You assume too much my friend.

So either engage in the discussion, or go moderate at KVR.

They could use your valuable knowledge and lightning fast google searches.

you could use the problem forum, or the OT forum, as it's mainly chatting :-)

Actually a whole different forum was used.

It was not a problem, but would have been a little thread showing how an idiot like me can use VDAT for a fast demo.

I decided to go elsewhere where a discussion from start to finish in its uses would be "tolerated ".

Thanks For the helpful directions on proper uses of the forum.

How can different uses of VDAT can be " Off Topic ", or a problem?

The problem I see is the improper assumptions, and snide remarks which suggest nothing, and simply derail the threads intentions.

Political correctivity is counter productive.

Be proud of your new life.

JimmyV, How dare you include a quick sidestep with nice pictures in a VDAT discussion (which is pretty general itself). I totally agree with the topic-police, thou shalt be banned forever. How dare you.

What you really should do is to break these posts down to three seperate ones. Then you can go around to others posts and post informative answers like yes, no, :D , :) , :( , :o , :-? , 8) , , :x , , , , and  . Also make note to comment on every little thing you are not happy with in other peoples posts.

This will serve two purposes. First and most important, it will get your "post count" incredibly high, bringing you much respect in the community, and it will also fit more the established rules of the topic-police.

sheeesh.

Hmmm...Thanks for the Vdat-clarifications, I haven´t used it more than once myself. Any hint on how to in a convenient way to make a pair of tracks into a stereo-file?
I certainly hope the Vdat gets updated on 5.0, with an optional stereo-pair for starters.

And Jimmy, I really liked the picture, any possibility of getting it in a high enough resolution to be used as wallpaper?

I hope all went ok with the gig, btw.

I´d rather have a good thread in the "wrong" place, than no thread at all.
This is what you pesky forum police-corps are making if you don´t chill down.
We have been over this before, and there are moderators. Let them decide when things go over top..

I can open two files as one stereo in soundforge. I think audigity also has an easy way to import a file in L or R channel!

Yea, and that´s basically what I do with Goldwave. Hmm..I was just hoping for an even easier solution...anyway, thanks Francis!

there's also a freeware app for windows called interleaver that will generate stereo files from seperate mono files:

Too bad! (about the photo) I collect waterfall-pictures, as it is. I first thought it was Igassu-falls, Brazil/Argentina you had there, what place is it??

stardust, I have used Magma with 3 scope cards and a 100W 12v. DC/DC PSU (the M3) http://www.mini-box.com/M3-ATX-DC-DC-AT ... wer-Supply - no loss for conversion then... Solar panels were on the roof of the caravan.

Scope4camping! :)

T

Edited: Zangsta: the interleaver works in a slightly strange way: it'll batch convert any number of files, but to make a stereo pair, both mono files must have the same name, only ending with -L.wav or -R.wav (you can choose a slightly different rule in the main page). So, from VDAT, you'll get track01.wav, track02.wav and so on. If you want to combine these two tracks into one stereo, you'd have to rename them to track01-L.wav and track01-R.wav (and not trak02-R.wav).

don't go chasing waterfalls
please stick to the rivers and the lakes that you're used to
I know you're gonna have it your way
or nothing at all
but I think you're moving too fast...

cheers, Tom

well, regarding VDAT quality - I made a strange observation, but never actually verified it with scientific accuracy and double tests.
I had the impression that there was an improvement (not groudbreaking, but noticeable), as long as the stuff remained within Scope - as soon as it was rendered using any Windoze related driver (wav, mp3) the magic seemed to disappeare... :o

np! I love the outdoors, I love the sea, and I love to make music. The main thing that still needs a lot of improvement are batteries, or other alternative ways of storing energy and re-convert to electricity. Lead batteries are still very pollutant and heavy.

A friend of mine had an idea once, that you could have solar panels powering, for instance, a small engine that would wind up a spring, increasing it's potential energy. When you needed electrical power beyond the capabilities of the generators (or at night), the spring would unwind and rotate a dynamo that would then generate electricity.

This was a bit crude, and I hope I explained it correctly. It sure has many conversions, with possible loss, but it would be 100% pollution free! Maybe it coud be done with pressured air: the solar panels would power a pump that would blow air into tanks, increasing pressure. When you need electricity a valve on the output could release high pressured air to move a dynamo and generate volts...

Just a couple of naive suggestions. I have no idea of the scale of these models, but I believe the spring would be something small (like portable/mobile), and high pressure tanks for small farming communities, or holiday houses whatever's you're thing...

But there are probably much easier solutions, if we decide to work on this. Low consumption means less need for big Amperes, and many small machines working together may need less energy than a big one...
