I think so, but...the Luna works on consumer level (-4 db).
This can be annoying if you use external gear working with +20db.
Mostly the master-out of a machine has a volume pot to quickly adjust levels.
But if sounds on them are routed to separate extra outputs, or you choose to do so, you have to adjust the levels in the presets itselves.
Quickly scanning presets is a hassle then :-(
I myself would go for the A16 now, since my Elektron machines are +20.

Ratio VRMS
+4 dBu (PRO) 1.228 V
−10 dBV (Consumer) 0.3162 V
+6 dBu (ARD, Germany) 1.55 V

+20 is about how much you power amp does. you could run speakers off it :)

I've never heard the A16 but I wouldn't expect the same quality in the luna box, probably not even close...

We have bougth the A16 XLR to our music education.

The A16 Ultra carries on the tradition of the successful A16 converter. It offers the features that made the A16 so popular, combined with fully up-to-date technology.

Highlights

* 16 high-quality 24-bit / 96 kHz AD/DA converters

These ensure crystal-clear sound and absolute fidelity. Supported sample rates: 32, 44.1, 48, 88.2 and 96 kHz.

* 16 analog inputs and 16 analog outputs

Provided as fully-symmetrical balanced phone jacks for perfect integration into the professional studio environment. Switchable between -10 dBv and +4 dBu.

* Two independent ADAT interfaces

Dual 8-channel I/Os, 24-bit, fully compatible with all devices which feature this widely-used digital interface.

* S-Mux permits ADAT transfers of 96 kHz audio

Although the ADAT standard does not include sample rates above 48 kHz, the A16 Ultra can transfer audio at 96 kHz using S-Mux mode, in which pairs of ADAT channels are coupled, giving you a total of eight S-Mux channels. Two independent Z-Link interfaces.

* Two independent Z-Link Interfaces

This SONIC CORE-proprietary interface format, based upon FireWire technology, offers greater transfer bandwidth than ADAT. With Z-Link, simultaneous transfer of all 16 channels at 24 bits / 96 kHz is possible. Ideal for use with all Sonic Core systems that are equipped with Z-Link.

* BNC Wordclock I/O

For synchronization of your complete digital setup. Functions both as master and as slave.

* VU meters for precise level setting

The 16 5-segment level indicators permit convenient, precise setting of signal levels and allow you to keep everything under visual control at all times.

* Memory function

The converter stores its current settings when you switch power off thus allowing for a smooth workflow at the next power up.

* Ultra-compact construction

The A16 Ultra packs concentrated technology into a single-height 19" rack unit with an especially appealing but also quite functional design.

I have only tried the A16 XLR, but I guess this one is very good too.

I think the only difference is, that you paid a couple houndred more bucks for xlr connectors instead of trs. And that you got a 2u box instead of a 1u box. Glad you like it though :)

I actually do not know, if those two models use an internal psu or a wall wart like the original A16.

The A16 Ultra uses a big wall wart. So does the XLR, but I really don't see the point of that unit, anyway, unless they've improved the internals as well.

you may quickly see it, if you're facing the worst case option of either 32 custom cables or 32 adapters for 10 Euro each ;) :D

afaik the new A16u cost almost exactly the same as it's 6.5 mm plug predecessor
an internally 'improved' version is economically impossible in that price range

cheers, Tom

Can somebody from Sonic Core tell us

Can somebody from Sonic Core tell us if the XLR model is internally improved?

Maybe I should take some photos on the inside?

it would be widely known :-)

why would it be? :)

the 1/4" version is balanced, the xlr version is balanced, the connector makes little difference. it's just a matter of which you prefer. don't feel bad, the A16 ultra is one of the better AD/DAs on the market by any manufacturer, and the best at it's price....

because of SC at least, they would have told...in their own interest :-)

not, "why would it be known?", but "why would it be improved?"...sorry for the confusion.... :oops:

well, if it could be improved at the same price point, great.

Does anyone know if the new "Sonic Core" brand of A16u's are shipping and selling in stores, or does everyone still have the old CreamWare stock? Places like JRRShop, Musician's Friend, etc., still have the old pictures.

Just curious....

the soniccore A16s are shipping, and here, at least, are in stock. afaik, there aren't any of the old ones. they were popular and sold out during the period between creamware and s/c.....
