Hi all,

Without wanting to get into any copyright issues could I use the manual of a very famous hardware compressor to better understand how to use Vinco i.e. does it replicate it's functionality etc.

I know you're gonna say any idiot can use it but I'm not any idiot

Seriously I have done some research on compression and have heard good things about Vinco but am struggling to control the beast.

BTW had a play with DAS 2A demo last night and this has got to be the most subtle compressor ever (in a good way) - seemed sooooo transparent. You can obviously choose to ignore this statement as I haven't got a clue what I'm on about anyway

For the hard of reading I am actually asking if I can use the manual for a piece of hardware to understand how Vinco works

I have the manual in front of me!

What I am interested in is knowing if the manual I have relates 1:1 to Vinco.

The Scope manual tells pretty much all. Don't know if it's 1:1 - what sort of things are mentioned in 117...oops manual that you think might be useful? Any examples that could be given would need adjusting anyway, but there are some presets here which are good as a starting point, but you'll still have to adjust the input and output gains to suit your material.

Vinco can't do 'British Mode' which was pressing all the ration knobs in at the same time to get a drive effect, but then again as this wasn't how it was designed it won't be mentioned in the original's manual either.

I will check the Scope manual. My issue with Vinco is understanding the fixed threshold (as it's the first device I have encountered that does this) and hence my question about the hardware manual as it explains it perfectly.

I appear to be having to drive low level signals fairly hard with the input to get overt compression (think clean guitar).

First off use the LED-style meters to judge compression. Obviously there's no threshold, you just fiddle with the input knob, so it does follow the way an 1176 works. i would maybe try and boost the signal before it hits the Vinco input (there are various free devices dotted round the z somewhere that can do this in or you could just pull up a channel strip and apply gain there). i usually aim for -6dB on the gain reduction meter with maybe 4:1 ratio for a non-over-the-top compression, leave it in RMS (Peak mode acts as a limiter) and i usually engage Soft Clip - i sort of assume the 1176 worked like this, don't think the soft clip would have been an option. i don't think the 1176 had ratio 2:1 or the limiting function.
