hi im in the process of starting a scope system and for the same price i can either get 2 pulsar 2 cards or 1 luna2 card and 1 scope pro(type 1) card. If i go second way ill use luna2 as master for lower latency but are there any disadvantages with this setup? Which way to go?? thanks for any advice

Welcome judiefre1,
i think the luna 2 and pro card would be the best way to go, there are lot of people here who use type1(old) and type2(new) in the same computer with great success plus you will have more DSP's available for your projects and the optional creamware/3rd party plug ins you may want to use in the future.

Success to you!

just avoid Pulsar1 as your whole system will be based on its latency administration. If you gather a luna+a scope pro 1st generation that will be very powerfull although you might have problems with the P100 reverb plugin from sonictimeworks. But who cares if you do not need this plugin ;-)

Furthermore, should you need one day to add more dsp and you will just have to get rid of the luna... Because many mobos have 2 pci slots, the more you gather DSPs on one sole board the better...

i would definitely go with second generation cards only...

Just a random thought... depending on what you want to do.. you might consider getting external ASB boxes. Minimax is great. And Pro-12 is great. And having ASB's is super fexible because they can just run all by themselves.

Other random thought... it might be worth waiting about 9 days here before any major purchase. MusikMesse is happening real soon now, and it is possible that inDSP or SonicCore might announce new products. Since it's only a week and a half from now, seems like it might be worth the wait to find out where you might want to spend your money.

It is a tough choice, but I would probably go for the Scope1 and the Luna. But which plug-ins are on the cards, and which i/o plates? This might be the final decision making detail.

well both systems i get the same plugins. Another question that will make this decision much easier for me ,is there a difference on a hardware perspective disregarding software between lets say a (15dsp scope pro type 1 booster card) and a (15dsp scope pro 2 booster card) regarding performance with both linked to an additional type 2 card thats using the I/O ?? thanks

'just avoid Pulsar1 as your whole system will be based on its latency administration'

i have pulsar1 + pulsar2 using pulsar 2 latency !!!!!
if thers 1 board type 2 in your system and you set this to your first board you can use lowest ully!!!!!! even with ios used on pulsar1 dont know how this works but it does.
-----------------

only difference is the pci bandwidth;

with just one type 1 board in your system you get less pciBandwi.
only interesting when using pciexcessive plugins like reverbs or stsxK
or do excessive HDrecording!!!!!!!!!!

difference is about 9 Masterverbs with one to 3 type 1 boards to 12 masterverbs in a type 2 setup; (same PC HW+SWsetup ofcourse!!!) see masterveb test topic.

this should certainly read
9 masterverbs if a type 1 board runs together with at least 1 type 2 board, versus 12 masterverbs in a pure type 2 setup
as a rule of thumb: the presence of a type one board 'steals' 25% of the possible PCI bandwidth

cheers, Tom
(I've never been able to run more than 5 masterverbs on just type 1 boards)

btw. i did some pci tests some time ago. I was able to load 9 masterverbs on a generation one card and 15 on a 2nd generation card...

:o how ? what chipset ? :o

btw: you can load a 100 of them when SFP has silently refused to work, as Shroomz once did... ;)

astro,

an intel chipset of my cheapo dell... i may have to say pure 2nd generation setup and 'mixed mode' setup. well, all i want to say is that if you consider to do 'serious' multitracking (24 channels), mixing and mastering in scope, you should get at least two scope pros 2nd generation. for my needs, it wasn't even enough. i'm working with 3 scope pros now...

cheers

I absolutely agree - and some 'mixed' setups seem to be rather tricky and a bit unpredictable, too.
I wouldn't suggest them either today, even more as recent cards have attractive software bundles...
Some of those Dells had an amazing build quality, though I don't like the company at all - my heritage from the traditional sales channels... ;)

cheers,Tom

A scope pro + pulsar2 here and I'm doing average 36 channel mixes without maxing out. BUT no synths running in scope. And I haven't used Shroomz mixer in a project yet. :)

i copied my post from masterverbtest topic!
-------------
ASUS P4P800SE
3GHz Intel
4GB RAM Samsung
Matrox Dualhead
2 Sata Raptor 74GB (fastest ive ever seen)
chieftech dragon + 450W supply
5 fans blowing in 3 out of case not all connected with the suply (depends on the weather 'temperature')
Liteon DVDwriter
Pulsar 1 , Pulsar 2 , SRB 1 (The one with 4DSPs) = 14DSPs
1 stdmcable
P2 + SRB on own IRQ
Pulsar 1 sharing IRQ with USB2.0 ex
all USB, Lan and Onboard Sound Active !! (use it as talkback)
TV/Video active
plane project = 9 MasterVerbs PCImessage on the 10th while whatching the news with the TVcard;
only XP pro (SP2) tweaking is to disable all windows sounds;
---------------
this setup runs very stable here i havent changed anything;
only change is the workflow (since your advice remember PMs)
i start every session with a plane project + i have a strategy for loading plugins
what first what least and so whatsching the dspmetervalues;
best for me would be a possibility to assing every plugin to a specifig board like the mixer better to a specific dsp (maybe a suggestion for sonicCore?)

best for me would be a possibility to assing every plugin to a specifig board like the mixer
at digitalaudiosoft we can do that :wink: we can choose the board id like in the cw mixer to run a plugin on other board in real time.
we are working on new plugins,like the noise reducer LE (see our news) a light version of the broadcast plugin we have made for fairlight and tf1.like ,a true tape analog simulator and i write "tape"..like if you record on a tape at 15/30 or 7.5....with bias adjsut...
so ,some new plugins based on professional wishes...and your wishes,tgstgs, can be implemented in those new plugins.

eric,
cool, good news!

astro,
i'm very happy with my dell, no problems so far. concerning the company itself, i agree...

bassdude,
i mostly mix with 24 channels (asio2-24bit). what makes my project heavy are the stw series, masterverb and delay on aux, some dynatube instances (bass and guitar), one or 2 synths and all the mastering stuff that i do at the same stage (stm2448 master inserts). i call it 'All-In-One'-Setup. I record/mix/master all within the same project, i hate to switch projects 'cause of loading time...

cheers

Would this be the case for making a typical dance track?? need 3 pro's?? or is it more for recording pourposes??
