if i'm coming out spdif to vdat 16bit, should i dither on the way in, i tried using stw's mastercomp dither before vdat 16bit, and it sounded good, but is it better to dither in scope or does vdat do that somehow, instead of truncating the notes

dithering should be the very last stage of the audio proces.
Normaly that is mastering

As far as I understand dithering only matters if your audio has very 'high' dynamic levels, at least to minus 24 dB or 'more', with 24 bit files that is.
At 16 bit it's more critical, that's true.
