I made this tool to be able to process the Mid and the Side of a stereo signal, for example you could need to have a little enhancement on some lead vocals with a little PsyQ without affecting too much the overall mix, just to make an example...

It's the classical Mid/Side encoder decoder with insert slots in between, insertable in a mixer. I think something similar existed for scope but I don't remember how was it called and what was doing really so I made it anew adding the needed circuits to my previous "Dual Slot" device.

Updated with sample delays up to 200 samples for each slot.

Enjoy

Hey Alfonso
The other ms en-/decoder is called xenon codec.
But this one misses a delay for phase adjustment, which is quite important (especially, when using filters  ) . Is this implemented on yours ?

No, not yet I just checked ReD Muzes Phase fixer I had in mind it could be used in a MultiFX inside the slots, but I discovered it's not an insert effect..I don't know if it's better to integrate 2 delays on the device or to make some insertable sample delays to be used within a Multi FX if needed...well, the first one of us that comes out with an insertable sample delay...

Sample delays added.

it's a zip file now.

Alfonso, I meant maybe add a mid output level knob if you add a mid output? This would be really nice for all sorts of reasons, including surround mixing applications. Maybe right in the center
I've done this one as an insert fx, so it can't have different outputs, but I can make the whole circuit in a modular, so you can use the mid and the side signals as you prefer...I could use an 8x8 modular frame so you can have several outputs...ok, as I have a little spare time...

I don't understand. It works also as standalone, just routing any stereo signal into it. I tried it with just an stm mix out & it worked great. Adding an xtra output for mid wouldn't work when used as an insert obviously, but when used standalone it would work a treat surely? Is this possible?

If you disagree, a modular version will be a great tho
It's not a big problem to work a new non insertable device, just some packing (boring) work to do....but a modular patch would be cool because you can add what you need to have and also instructional somehow...

I'll see what to come out with first!

Ha, anyway, if you want to remove the mid or the side from the global signal, you just have to activate an empty slot to mute it...it's good for karaoke too  although the simple side signal always sounds strange, but this is true also for the karaoke plugins, because you have a mono signal as a result. If you mute the side, you have the mid though and maybe that's what you need, the device itself is very light on dsp.

Alfonso, you are a great guy! That's brilliant. m-s compress, side morph, stereo image sidechain expanding with filtering and saturation... You should hear my last night mix, There is big space in there.

Hi!
I see the only problem with this 'open' architecture -as allready discussed- in the DSP distribution of the both mono devices. So O.k. you can sampledelay till you get the right phase.

What about building such an insert slot as ONE STEREO - slot. So EQs like the graphEQ with stereo structure, but two independend mono-sides could be used for mid/side processing without those phase issues.

Just an idea. Could be a quick build
The idea would lead to an open modulebased MS -processing unit which can use every well designed (concerning DSP distribution) stereo device with independend LR chanels.

MSSLOT Is it working ???

Dear Alfonso when I try to open a device on the inserts (mono or stereo side) there is no drop down menu appearing !
Any thought why is that on my machine ?

Hi, :)

I'm not at my music computer now, but I don't remember this thing, I think I would have noticed.....do you have the dropdown menus in your mixer slots? I'll check as I'm back in my studio.

Anyway there are MS encoder and decoder in FleXor III too, just if you wan't to try some more fancy architectures...or just simple ones....you can make also a simple encoder decoder Patch to route external fx using 8 I/O modular frame...

Happy New Year.
