Sorry for another newbie question. I've decided to turn off XTC to see if I get more fleibility but now I don't have a clue how to set it up even to do something simple like play a softsynth or run a simple sequencer like Energy XT. All the project examples are over complicated and so are the projects inthe section below. I've been trying to create a simple template to build on - just using RGC Triangle 2 standalone - but even though I have set it up with an asio source and asio dest linked to the small mixer when I open triangle it says Scope platform not runing (it is) or asio source/dest not included in project (they are). Also I'm not sure where to put midi in so I can even play the instrument. XTC was much simpler!

Can anyone walk me through this or provide some simple starter templates please?

Hmm, I would first try to restart scope given the error you got.

Then, if you are only going to play a synth from Scope just load the midi sequencer source driver. Hook its midi connection to whatever scope device you wish, i.e. whatever synth you like.

Your sequencer (?) will need to be setup to output midi to creamware midi i/o 1 (2 etc., as long as its a creamware driver loaded in your scope environment.
One driver has 16 midi channels, as you might know.

This should work.

ASIO is for audio only, and you might want to load one of the drivers provided given what sequencer you use.
Try loading one of the asio 2 modules. It should load inputs and output modules automatically (double-click on the device-icon when you have loaded driver to select the amount of inputs/outputs).

Try to visualize SFP as a real studio with cables and equipment.

I can run the scope devices fine - its just I wnat to run some softsynths and sequencers too - just keeping it simple to learn how to do it. A simple project with Energy XT as host would be fine but it still won't recognise my ASIO ins/outs and I'm not sure if I'm doing it right - I could do with a screenshot in the manual where it writes about connecting Logic and Cubase.

Dunno Energy XT, but this program has to 'see' the Midi and ASIO ports if they are correctly loaded and routed in SFP.
This can't be much different from Cubase or Logic
You don't know a user forum for Energy XT somewhere?

Energy XT is just a simple modular VSTi host.

It's OK I worked it out but so far I can only play - if I record in Energy XT it only records the synths and effecst inside it (obviously) but I'd like to know how to record everything that comes out of the mixer including SCope effects too.

if it recognises the Scope Asio driver for playback, recording should work as well. Select the ASIO Scope driver for audio input and it should record all the sound coming from the outputs of the mixer connected to the ASIO destination module in your SFP project.

Silly question,
but, do you load your project first,
and fire up your host app later?

Yes
I have enabled the correspoding ASIO in and OUT in the host (tried with Tracktion now too) and neither seem to record though they let me play a VSTi quite happily and record that they won't record or even recognise the audio from Scope.

If ASIO in/outs are loaded in Scope and eXT is set to playback/record through the Scope ASIO drivers, you should have no problems at all.

You can hear playback from eXT right?

You can record VSTi's in eXT as audio?

To record Scope synths in eXT you would need to run MIDI either directly from your keyboard or from eXT into the Scope synth. Then you would need to record audio in eXT using whatever ASIO inputs are available.

Perhaps eXT can't record audio and midi simultaniously, I don't know, this is only theory

But, exactly were in the chain does things not work?

A fellow Tracktion user!
just to be sure, what do you have connected to ASIO out device in your project (ie the one that is seen as input from host perspective)?

I have set up the asio 2 24 bit source connected to input 1 l& r and with asio 2 dest connected to the dl&r 1's. The two mixer outs are connected to my analogue out (speakers). In Tracktion I've enabled all asio ins and outs that are shown. Midi goes from the pulsar midi in to the sequencer midi dest (and from there into Tracaktion). Does this sound right. I've also enabled end to end so I can here what I record. I can record an internal VSTi like this but if I add some effects from scope or s scope insrument it doesn't record that - I tried ading one of the asio ins to the track below but just got feedback and rendering the track and exporting it to wav just seems to render the synth part without the scope effect.

dl&r 1's?
connect the mixer's out to ASIO dest, or a mixer bus, but then swap the channel outs to a bus in the bus page
Send returns however can't be bussed.
Recording though a bus is relevant if you apply realtime modulation, and you need to listen to the song whyle recording the track.
You can save a bus routing via ASIO Dest 2 l/r in your 'default song project', and keep the mixer master out to ASIO1 l/r.
Just by bussing any channel to the connected bus and choosing the right ASIO input port in your sequencer you can immediately start recording, mute the recording channel against feedbacking.
hope this will help, if it wasn't layout already in this thread

rendering does not include scope fx (think of them as hardware in this case  )
if you have e-to-e enabled for a track then you are indeed creating feedback loop.
i have it disabled, as i get all the monitoring i need thru scope.
[edit]of course i have e-to-e disabled for audio, it is needed for MIDI to be echoed back to scope [/edit]

OK but if that's the case how do I record everything I play, not just the stuff inside Tracktion or Energy XT? I've been trying a few setups and nothing works properly - I tried routing the mixer outputs into the asio dest and setting the d1 channels to the analog out but it still only recorded the synth and not the effect.

Would I be better off getting one of th Scope recording devices like ADAT? Is there a free recorder available that will just record the output that I can then import into a sequencer and edit further. How do you set up your projects for Tracktion (is it possible to see a screenshot of to get a copy of the project file?)

thanks

do you render your recording or record real-time on an audio track?
I'm sorry, I only know Cubase so I don't know how it works in other sequencers but if you just do a render (or maybe it's called "export audio" or something like that) it will just use the internal audio engine so you won't get anything that exists outside the application, like Scope is (it is indeed like hardware). So you always need to set up a channel with the ASIO scope as input source and then record realtime as you play the song.

I like to keep things simple because mostly I freely improvise in realtime so what I really need is just a way of recording as I play that is relatively hassle free and records the whole sound (inc effects etc) without disrupting my creative flow. Once I have a few tracks then I layer them in a sequencer like Tracktion or Logic and mes with them further.

why not just route mixer outs into asio, as somebody already advised?
you will record everything that goes to the speakers then.
i am sure you know, that in project you can route outputs to more than one destination?

Success  I was right about creating an audio track below the midi one. Now I've swapped the analogue out and asio dest inputs so the asio dest take the mixer out put and and my speakers are routed from d1l&r I can record the midi and audio at the same time (with end to end off of course) and this time the audio track includes the effects and synth.

I can upload examples if you like.

Thanks for the tips

edit - sorry we posted at the same time - that's essentially what I have done now - thanks

another thing you could do is use more than a pair of asio channels and record everything into separate tracks. (context menus on asio source and dest modules allow setting up number of channels)
you could use direct outs from mixer then

Yeah I did that - 6 sources, 2 dests
