But i suspect alot as changed since the download is 266M !!!! o:o

Btw this will also be available via windowsupdate in a few days if you are willing to wait and use the automatic update system or manually visit it. Since this download includes ALL patches and changes for ALL systems you can imagine its quite a bit larger than what windowsupdate will actually install. I prefer to do things manually myself, and have more than 1 system here to justify it.

Also, this update adds a few things (probably listed in the above link) that you'll want to be aware of:

InternetExplorer and OutlookExpress will have changes. IE gets a popup blocker and some new options in Internet Options and OE will now manage attachments better (using permissions on NTFS systems among other things) as well as not display images embedded in emails unless you choose to do so (something SPAM people use to find out if the email is recieved).

There is also a new security console that will integrate itself with your software firewall and antivirus, as well as prompt you periodically to turn on autoupdate. There is no antivirus software from MS yet (they're working on it actually) but they do have a firewall component that gets installed now. I've disabled all of the above including the service that runs in the tasktray as the 'security console' so that it stops bugging me.

I should mention I have a hardware firewall and antivirus already, and I've been managing NT since 1996 so I'm willing to do all updates manually (if needed).

Good luck installing, I think its worth it even if u have a few hassles with the above components.

I like the one about the archiving bit not being set when copying files from CD Rom to the hard drive. Actually, I thought that was just a nice cool feature of XP. I hate having to deal with that. Now it looks like they will be fixing that so you will have to manually go in and change it. Bummer

MS has announced the date of August 16th (I believe) for when Windowsupdate.com will start serving out necessary sp2 components to end users. Obviously this will not be the full 266 Mb download and hence will be faster, and I believe they may also roll out the windowsupdate 5 service as well. I may be mistaken on that last point (can't remember if it was for sp2 or longhorn).


Funny how much negative press there has been over the 'opinions' about sp2. Companies as large as IBM and HP will *never* let large updates like this get manually installed without at least supervision from the IT department (unless you're considered special somehow or have made friends with your local lab coats). Its not really a big surprise when they announce that they need to 'test' patches before they're applied.

At the same time I would certainly check forums for whatever software you're using and note any problems that have been discussed. Installing things blind and hoping for the best can also be a recipe for disaster, whether its on Linux, Xp or osX (etc.)

On that note, has anyone here done the auto update/SP2 install yet?

Wouldn't mind knowing if there are any compatability issues with apps like cubase sx and sfp 3.1c/4.0????
