I am still learning about my new Scope Professional card. I have an external analog effect that I want to try running some synths through. Can I send a synth from the main outs of Scope, into my analog hardware effect, returning into the main Scope inputs for recording it into a track in my sequence program of choice? Will I get a feedback loop going? Do I need an an ADAT Bridge (a16 ultra) to send it out to a separate output?

If you send audio out to the effects processor and back in again, nothing will go to your speakers! I don't think that's a good idea.
You don't have to go for the huge A16 Ultra. Check out Alesis' AI3 converter -- it sounds great, it's cheap, and it plugs into the ADAT I/Os. Of course, if you need 96KHz support or 16 I/Os, then you could get the A16 Ultra.

Hey thanks! That's what I thought. I ordered an A16, because I do want the 96Khz recording. It is just going to take a while to get it. I wanted to experiment with it, but I can certainly wait.

If you don't mind a bit of patching you can do it.
To record the effect:
Code: Select all
Synth -> Analog Out -> Effect -> Analog In -> Sequencer
To play back what you recorded:
Definitely will be easier with the A16Ultra though.
Incidentally I would recommend recording at 24 bit / 44.1 kHz. The 96 kHz sampling rate will suck the life out of your DSPs and fill up your hard drive in no time. The sound quality won't be improved much -- I can't tell the difference, anyway.
Out of curiosity what outboard effect are you using?

Hey, thanks for the advice on the 96Khz. I never used it before and thought it might be better. I have an awesome analog effect box. Do you remember the ARP String Ensemble? It happens to be my all time favorite synth sound. But basically all it is, is an organ with chorus-like filter. I have a MTI ADL-100 Analog String Ensemble, which is basically that exact filter. So I can get that sound perfectly and much more.

If you like string ensemble sounds you should try AlienMachine's excellent
Vintage String Ensemble V2 and
Vintage String Ensemble V2.5 ModularIII patches(also includes Modular2 version).
As you may have guessed i'm a big fan too.
