Hi, just a quick question, how many versions of the A16 have been released? I am thinking of buying one second hand and do not want caught out with a high price?
Also,(techie question) can I route to multiple tracks from the pulsar to my mixer without this convertor?
Cheers

Just two a16s - original & ultra.
What sort of mixer do you have?

I have a Yamaha 01v96, but thought about about an adat card for the Yamaha, but the A16 might work out cheaper. What would you say?

As i recall the original A16 was a bit noisy (the fan, not the audio conversion!) and this was cured by the A16 Ultra, so switch it on if you can before you buy and see how noisy it is.
Also i think the A16 Ultra can handle 96kHz and the regular A16 doesn't - but i may be wrong as i own neither (this may not be an issue for you but it's worth knowing.

I think the old A16 is 16 bit only. The ultra is 24......I think!

a-16 costs a bit more than two adat cards, i think. And then the leads.
I wonder if anyone here has had good results with adat sync on yamaha desks...should work!
meanwhile someone's flogging an a-16
here - old one like mine.
I recommend 'em

What would be a good price for an old A16 and what would be a maximum I should pay?
How would this connect to my my puslar/Yamaha without the Z link? Would it be optical?
(Am I right in thinking the Z link is firewire)?
Sorry about all the questions
Cheers

yes, ZLink uses the same cable and signal as FireWire, but the data content is specific to Scope cards - it doesn't work in a 'regular' FW port on the mobo.
Can't remember the prices exactly, but afaik they rarely go below 400 Euro on eBay and usually sell at 500-600.
The old A16 and the Ultra are frequently messed in 2nd hand sales, so it was a good idea to ask
cheers, Tom

Hi Astroman, Cheers for the quick response.
You mentioned that they are messed!!
"The old A16 and the Ultra are frequently messed in 2nd hand sales, so it was a good idea to ask"
Do you mean that they are often broken and are they worth paying 400-600 euros?
Cheers again

no, i think he means that people often are confused about which version they have...

yes, that's what I had in mind - and that it was a good idea to be informed before actually going to make a real deal
On eBay it has become widespread practice to place a last second bid, so the auction prices don't have much meaning.
One has to be informed about the possible price range in advance to set a preferred max bid and then place it as late as possible. Doesn't work always, though

I've actually got an A16 in perfect condition that I don't need. Problem is shipping, if you're at all interested. I'm in Oz, but it's quite heavy.

i´ve read test about ad/da devices. the behringer was better than the a16.
if you don´t have to rercord in 96khz the berhinger is the better device.

Er... that was all Greek to me (well German actually), what was the conclusion? i'm not saying that the A16 is the best, just that Behringer stuff is usually cheap and nasty and i can't tell which was the best from that feature. Also were there any musical tests or is it all sine waves at certain freq's etc? Specs and musicality don't always go together.

i think an appogee would be the best solution but who can afford 3000 bucks.
in respect to the price the behringer is the best. you can also download wav testfiles. check it by yourself. i was disappointed by the creamware after hearing the testfiles.
i think if you have enough money get yourself the rme adi . if not get yourself the behringer.

i've used the behringer and it's pretty good, quite usable anyway(not as well shielded as it could be, though)....
if you really think it sounds better than the a16, i've got this swamp land for sale.....

the amazona test doesn't include the A16, but the A16
ultra - as already mentioned they get constantly messed
The bottomline of the test was something like:
with input leveled close to optimal the difference of the units was neglectible (???), so they didn't want to comment it at all.
At levels -40 dB there were significant and easy detectable differences .
Then the usual price performance, pseudo-objective blurb, though the test started with some good information about digitization basics.
If the old A16 has converter stages similiar to the Pulsar One, I'd vote for it - whatever bit depth is has

the A16 mentioned by Wayne
here seems to catch rather few attention, possibly due to the low feedback rate of the seller caused by revenge fb.
good chance it will finish low.
cheers, Tom
