There has been some discussion going on about this new filesharing service Weedshare:

Taken from there website:
Weed has a different view on Internet file-sharing. Instead of trying to shut down file-sharing, we think people should be paid for it. Instead of punishing fans who don't respect artists' rights, we think it makes more sense to reward those who do.

When you use Weed's software to buy a Weed file and then share the file with someone else who buys it, you'll earn a payment based on the sale price.

20% of the sale price goes to you, 10% of the price goes to the person who shared the file with you, and 5% goes to the person who shared the file with that person.

50% of every sale always goes to the artist or publisher who owns the song. The remaining 15% goes to Weed.

http://www.weedshare.com/

I must say that I'm a bit interested, since as it is now, my music is "just" free on the web at a few places, this new service might enable me to make a few bucks out of it (Weedshare propose that you charge about $1-1½ per song, but the price is entirely up to the songrights owner), without having to be accepted by any big firms or labels first.

Does any of you have any experience with weedshare or know of any "hidden" agendas like signing over rights without knowing it etc.....

Cheers!
Thomas

I was about to post on the mailing list but i prefer planetZ.

Ecept the confidentiality that some people fear (not me, for the moment) , i think that's really nice. That's what most musicians have been looking for and never found until now (mp3.com was almost a hoax for me, with their half a cent for 3 millions downloads ratio). Or maybe i'm not well informed (i've been a lot into DP in recent years  so i didn't take much time looking at those mp3 sites).

It made me want to remix my own album and put it online, so i guess this weed thing is good and motivating... Eventhough i don't expect too much from web exposure....

So i wish them good luck and may be i'll join in. AS Petal said, most of us have/had their own track on the web, for free etc... that's fine for most musicians I know, but there are still people who are willing to support artists, so why not ?

What is complicated is how to index musicians and how to expose them in a fair way (ie not the mp3.com way which could only favour the oldest members). For the moment, i didn't find the website look so great but that's minor point .

Well, my 2 cents....
