Try this: Before loading Pulsar and whatever sequencer you use, use a utility such as Turbo Memory to recover ram your PC won't let you have.

Do you need this even if you have an enormous amount of RAM?

Not everything that stays in RAM solely effect RAM. Many programs don't remove themselves from RAM can still tie up other system resources, can demand a percentage of PCI bandwidth, etc. It all depends on the software in question.
It's never a bad idea to leave your Task Manager open and if performance starts flagging, take a look and see if stuff you aren't using is still floating around in memory. I've found that certain programs (like that stupid SYNOPSOS copy-protection for CubaseSX) really like to stay in memory well after the program has been closed, causing Cubase not to close down fully. It can ruin the performance of the rest of the system until it's pulled out.
