I'd turn off the computer at the mains so that there's no power going to the motherboard...leave the mains lead in, though.

Touch an exposed part of the computer case or a cold tap (kitchen/bathroom) to make sure you're discharged of any static before working on the computer's innards (cold, dry Winter days are best for building up static).

Other than that, adding more RAM's pretty straightforward.

I may be mistaken but I'm pretty sure that chipset is limited to 512mb RAM maximum.

Typically, your motherboard - check the manual; it should clearly state the RAM limitation.

I'm in the same boat - PIII 1GHz CPU but the motherboard has a 512MB limit (although I'm currently running with 384) - dodgy Chaintech VIA chipset nonsense!

Works well enough, though...

Krisrocco - all chipsets have a maximum amount of possible RAM according to their design.. the Intel 815 chipset just happens to be limited to 512MB.. if you want 1GB of RAM you will need to upgrade the whole motherboard/CPU/RAM system.
