Basic P's post about timing got me thinking about one of my only small grips about the scope platform in general.
midi timing.
Now, yeah, I know it's much better than most "hardware" synths, but it still could be sample accurate on playback! Obviously I know this doesn't apply to recording though. If everything is going to be left inside the DAW, why should we expect anything less than this?
Is it possible to implement a Rewire like protocol? I know other non Propellerhead apps are using it, so...
Any idea's?

well, I'd extend your idea to midi processing in general.
THAT could really be improved a lot, from the obvious aspect of surface control to the extension of arbitrary processing of midi controller data in modular.
But Basic Pitch's problems are OS related and the only cure would be the implementation of SFP in a realtime OS like QNX. Rather unlikely to happen, but at least not impossible and I'd gladly pay the $300 extra runtime fee for such a thing.
For M$ that market segment is far too small to change their OS accordingly - on the Apple side I'm more optimistic, but SFP for OSX isn't even released yet, so I'd better be careful.
my 2 cents, tom

Good points, but my personal feeling is there should be no slop if everything is contained with the DAW itself. If you're dealing with external gear that's one thing, but this isn't. We're talking about all internally routed data.
If you run Reason along side Cubase via Rewire, unless your system has issues in general, the timing is dead on for playback. Both applications are accounting for the inconsistancies within the OS as it stands. It's my understanding that protocols like Rewire or even the midi time stamping like LTB or AMT are feeding information slightly ahead of when it's supposed to play to insure accuracy.
We know it can be done because it's already working!
All in all it really doesn't bother me. I've learned to live with and love the limitations of my setup. For tight percussion I simply use sample accurate vsti's and if there's still any lag there I certainly can't hear it. Same goes for bass, I record it straight to audio. Pads and things that sustain I run live and I don't mind if those are slightly off either way as you can't really tell. However, it would be nice to not *have* to do it that way!
Cheers
