I don't doubt you on that Gary, but it wouldn't seem wise to buy a $300 mic to put through a $3000 mic pre. On the other hand the same could be said for putting a $3000 mic through a $300 mic pre which would seem to be the case with GreenBlueGold's Sanken > Sytec suggestion since one of the channels on that mic pre is essentially a $225 channel. I'm not saying it won't sound good, but it just seems a bit odd.

yes, i'd go with the pre, personally.

a great pre will benefit almost ALL mics used. i've had lots of luck putting cheap mics through great pres and they ALWAYS sound better to my ears than great mics through cheap pres. it's jmho. if one had lots of money, one could get lots of nice stuff..

I could be wrong about that Sytek 4ch mic pre. It might just be exceptional value for money. At $225 per channel it certainly seems that way if it's really any good. I actually like the look of their MPT-1 though, since I think I'd rather have a top notch 1ch tube mic pre than a cheaper 4ch clean mic pre. There's so many options when it comes to mics and pres though (and even more opinions by those who've used them).

The syteks are an exceptional value. The designer is one of the engineers behind neotek boards which are some of the finest available.

Well if a $900 4ch mic pre is good enough to service a $3000 mic maybe it's a no brainer. That would leave room for buying 3 other mics later which are all different. I guess you could run a couple of tube & a couple of capacitor mics into it.

Personally for myself:
Better speakers prob PMC's wtih built in amp - plus some acoustic treat of the walls for better sound
Decent furniture and desk
As I do no recording with mics (everything is MIDI based) - lots more cash spare
Some more VSL libraries
Perhaps a Korg M3/ Oasys with 88-key weighted keyboard
Scope Xite

Prob get rid of £10,000 buying this lot

But i'd rather work on more theory before getting into serious composiition

Now back to doing the harmony and counterpoint diploma........
