Greetings
I've been progressing. I think the kits are suitable for my needs now, which also means they are ready to be served. I'm hoping to get hosting arranged soon.
Download size will be a lot smaller than I thought. I packed both kits with self-extracting rar and they are a bit over 100MB/kit. So it will be 'only' 200MB total download.
I think it's my time to take a break..
Spoimala, if you think those files will fit into your server, please let me know. Unfortunately I live in Joensuu, so there is quite a long distance. I promise to use a wooden snare in my next drum collection

Is it speacially self-extracting rar or all rar in general?
I need to test how big they will be as a zip. But I'm afraid zip can't compress audio data as well as rar. If there will be a problem with size and available room, I might need another host more for mac people. I'm sure we can find a way

Hi Andy,
The newest version of Stuffit works with RARs. I don't remember if the OS9 version (7.0.x) does, though. But the 8.0.2 for OSX does it for sure

why didn't i think of this before??? i'll just download it on the mac, burn it to cd, and unrar on my (internetless) laptop pc, burn that, and bring it back to mac...
maybe i should get a cheap old OSX, just to network with the pc, and so it seems, more and more, little advantages. the old G3 is no machine to run OSX comfortably though, but for these little tasks, it should do fine.

Right now I'm behind an old G3 iMac @ 400MHz, 66MHz bus, 192MB of RAM and it works, to say, 'normal' with Jaguar (10.2.8 )
Just for plain internet browsing it's great and I can see no disadvantages

excellent news wojtek... you know where i can get an 'old' version? do they still sell them, or do shops only have the latest versions? can you get them second hand? i'd investigate myself if i wasn't in a hurry to go to dinner...

This provider is a well known one so you don't have to worry
Jaguar is 10.2 and I suggest you to dl the 10.2.8 combo update (i.e. the updater contains all the things from 10.2.1 to 10.2.
- it's just the most stable version from the 10.2 family.
Don't bother looking for 10.1 - this is crap and vveeerrryyy sslllooowww

Yes, indeed we HAVE to share it, I just remembered I have 1gig / month limit.... Luckily, I nearly don't have any other traffic at all. But one gig..huh, it is 1 upload and 4 downloads :/
I hope they are not too agressive on that.

Wouldn't it be possible to get this spread by using bittorrent? Seems to me it would be a good choice at least during the initial download frenzy.
Not sure about the details in starting a torrent, but it involves having a server running and then spreading out a link to the server, right?

If so, count me out. I'm behind a tight firewall.
Still for anyone who's using file sharing might be a great idea! If you can all agree on the software to use...

Bit torrent is really a nice idea here, i guarantee that 1 gig/month isnt sufficient, that would be used on the first day (maybe first 2 days)
if it wasnt for the fact that i am going away for a week i'd take it upon myself to "make the torrent". as i understand it, the only thing we would need is server space for an approx. 50kb file, which would be handled by torrent clients (easy to use, and no spyware/virus risk, as long as the sourcefile isnt infected). This would mean that we would in the beginning need some seeders, which could provide the first downloads. typically this would be broadband users like myself who has a machine running 24/7. downloaders would thereafter share the upload traffic and provide bandwith.
as far as i understand, and if john cooper aknowledge, the 50 kb file could be hosted on this forum. the bandwith serving the drumkit would thereafter be provided by us users.
So what do u think? this isnt limited by isps by the way, as long as u dont have an upload limit, as it doesnt need isp server space.
