official records indicate that japan had already made signals about their readiness to surrender BEFORE the nukes were dropped....mr. president wanted to send a message.
a regime like hitler's is best stopped BEFORE it happens.unfortunately that takes an informed and enlightened populace, something no government wants....
unfortunately, my brothers and sisters must die everytime.
I've just discovered why things are not working so well...
Hitler was actually looked at as a good leader by i.e. England, before he took too much ...

That's a pretty disturbing joke. Anyone that thinks that this is a reasonable solution in this day and age needs to get their head adjusted. On 2003-01-25 17:05, coc999 wrote:

Anyway, it's a fascinating book. I approached it from the pov of one's who's interested in the physics and science of it. The book is much more of the human drama of the scientists, their personal conflicts, the unfathomable challenge of the project, all the way thru to those who suffered and died from the terrible creation, and how the coldwar fell out of it all despite those who counseled ways to avoid that outcome (e.g. niels bohr). The darker side of the story is told in gruesome and terrifying detail. And the ability of the goverments of the world to carry out absolutely-enormous scale projects in total secrecy, right under the noses of their citizens is equally terrifying.

I’m sorry this thread took this direction… It is the second time it happens and I can’t say I’m enjoying… I started by posting something completely unrelated with what has followed later. I have never wanted to build a political discussion or something like that Z friends… I just found a photograph to be funny, that’s it. It seems to me that even talking about orange marmalade, anyhow, some people will find a way to related it to what they want.
I do not have any particular position against president Bush, nor in his favour. Anyway, politics is a very complicated matter… it seems no politician wants for us to understand it, for their convenience… I have never believed that the president of a particular country is the one who actually presides the country. As I once said, I firmly believe there are two sort of politics, the known one and the hidden one. The first it is there for us all to believe whatever politicians wants for you to believe, it is the fashion politics, the TV one, the ONLY ONE we can talk about... Then there is a second one, which we will probably never get to know, the real politics, the hidden one only accessible to an extremely short number of people: high politicians.
Being said that, I would like to say that whenever I post something that seems to be related to politics it would not be in fact, related to politics, perhaps to social matters, but not to strict politics. I am not interested in talking about politics, least of all in terms of lefty, righty, centry, highty, lowgy …whatever…
I could have posted the second photo I’ve posted, instead of the first, it doesn’t matter which one I would have posted before, I only wanted to have some fun with you, that’s all, just for a laugh.
Let’s have some friendship in this world full of pain and problems, let’s have a corner of peace and understanding, people who loves arts and music want to join in a warm and balmy context, don’t we? There is no need for more confusion, life it’s not a game. There is no difference in the world when talking, there is only difference around you when you do, and what you do is right, and truly good in nature.

C'mon, you can't post a picture ridiculing the president of the US and then say it has no political content ! Would a picture of you carrying a "Presidency for Dummies" book be funny ? Of course not ! Those pictures are only funny because of their implied political comment.
But if it is political - even political humour - the point should really be "who cares" ! We can all have a laugh about these things no matter what we believe as long as everyone is relaxed and takes no personal offence. It must be done in the manner of a friendly disussion among old friends sitting in comfortable chairs at night. It is an intellectual debate, not a shouting match at a protest rally.
I posted a more serious pic - then some more funny ones - because I think it reminded people of its broader context. But again, so what ? We can handle that much can't we ?
As John says there are cultural dangers - some topics are simply not considered appropriate for humour by some people.
But it'd be a shame if all debate was stifled because of the fear that some little comment would upset someone. Commonsense should - and does - cover most cases easily.
With the world's problems seemingly escalating all the time it's common in all sorts of forums to see debates explode into bad feelings. But it is times like this when calm discussion of events is particularly valuable, especially with the insight of our varied membership from around the world.
With perhaps a minor exception here and there I think the Z is handling it all very well.
