no way, it's alright!
If you have enough lightpipe connections.
If you want to record in 96kHz, you only have 8 IOs (SMUX), that's the
only bad thing about it. With Zlink you have all 16 channels @ 96kHz.

Sorry, I just got more confused now....
When using external clock I need to use 2 optical cables to have full A16U connected to the Scope, right?
I work anyway in 44.1 so it's fine.

Yes, that's it!
Or 4 cables for all 16 ins AND outs.
Didn't want to confuse you...
Cheers,
Jan
PS: What kind of IO-plates do you have?
If you only have one Zlink-plate, you have two Lightpipe connectors.
That means you only have 8 ins and 8 outs. There's no way to use them as
2x8 ins.
If you want to use 16 ins from the a 16 you need to have an other IO-plate (or
luna).
So you have to buy clock, syncplate and an additional card / IO-plate if you
only own a ZLink-plate... That's expensive for the chance of getting perhaps
a little better results...

Now you got me really confused
My Scope card has only 2 optical and 2 Z connections availble. How can I use 4 optical cables at the same time than?
I need to have a stereo IN and 16 OUT at the same time for my OTB mix.

Nah, here we go
Anyway, I quit with the idea. Too much problems for a little improvement

the A16 via z-link is VERY good.
Janni may very well be right(i'm sure he is), still, you might write to Ralf and verify whether or not the z-link connection and a syncplate can be used together with the bnc clock input on the A16.....

It's cool man
I feel better again

No really, it's fine... I was just ghost hunting with this idea
Better to use this money on something else like more DIY parts for my new Pultec MEQ5.

Will a clock help my clients get to the studio on time?
If not, will it help improve the sound of the high school punk bands that record here? No? Oh well. Then forget it

Did someone verify this? I have 5 digital devices connected to my Scope PCI system so maybe it's time for an external clock generator but only if I can keep using the Z-Links.

well, you can always sync the A16 to z-link in any case. try it.

I can only speak for my xite-1 and my big Ben that's clocking 7 devices.
But I would be surprised if the pci systems are different.
I rely on my BB being the master, so I wanted to bnc clock the a16u to it too. I could do that but not in zlink mode.
So, I concluded that zlink only works with the clock that's "embedded" in the zlink transmission.
It's been a while, but I am quite sure that my scope (for xite) would run zlink mode only as long as scope was the master clock. Otherwise, no zlink operation, sorry.
I wish someone could prove me wrong. Then I would (re)buy an a16u at once to solve my i/o shortage

what is wrong with syncing the A16 via z-link?
why doesn't that work?

As long as the topic is external clock generators, it won't work, because zlink operation demands the scope system to be the clock generator, not the clock slave.
Proviso: Again, this is how I remember the constraints before I sold my A16U. Someone please prove me wrong

no, the A16 Ultra can slave to Z-Link.

This thread is also about external wordclock sync and zlink:
http://forums.planetz.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=13639
When I buy some BNC cables I can try it out for myself. I have a Korg MR2000S that has wordclock out and I can connect it to my Scope system (with sync plate) and my two A16 Ultras and see if it works.

ok, the A16 can slave to Z-link but ....
Can the A16 slave to Z-link if Xcite or Scope cards are not set as master clock but slave to an external clock ?
(i think xite knight was talking about that and i would like to know)

Oki just read the thread you point out and we just need to connect the Xcite and A16U wordclock to the master and the Z-Link connection should work ?
is it ok ?
