Hey Geoff, thanks for all that information !!

Our old deck IS actually an Akai, but I can't remember the model no. I'll dig it out of storage & check, but I think It needs a replacement switch which might be a problem. Pfff, it's probably not worth messing with

yeah, there's probably a shorter way, though I must admit I like that kind of manipulation with physical devices... (and btw some old Telefunken reel-to-reels are nice tube amps, if silenced by removing power from the mechanics)

anyway, for the wierdo-wierd of delay...
anyone tried to insert an Echo into an Echo insert slot... :o ?
feedback galore, but you can handle it :P

cheers, Tom

Stardust is on the money in the different uses catagorey.
I shall attempt to explain why I use so many. All persomal tastes of course.

I love reverse reverbs, and backward looped delays, so I am overboard with this stuff. Celmos Tape Sim is excellant for that vintage analog tape trail off at the end of backward loops, which I use the Line 6 Echo Pro to play live licks in reverse.
SpaceF's delays are just unique in their own right, but I use the Echo35's SynFX, and get it to sound like the Ursa Major Space Station, which was my old pad delay in the day, even though it is a reverb. It has a large amount of taps which go from sounding like a hall to a flanger. It was on most synth tracks that required ambience back in the day. I can go from a tight and fat sounding chorus / flanger, to a more spread out millesecond multitap with the touch of my foot. Since it ( FC7 ) is worthless as a swell pedal, It has acquired less precise duties.
I recently heard Steffen's modular tape sim and use that on a per patch basis with other modular synth patches.
The SSB delay is great for modulating drum tracks.
I use the SFP Lexicon PCM41 delay for tracking mono synth solos.
Then there is the SFP Lexicon Prime Time for that 12 bit / 8 bit lo-fi thing which is amazimgly accurate. Even my Line 6 Echo Pro sounds digital next to that.

Lost In The '70's,
SFP lexicon delays??? Surely you mean PSP ;)

PSP84 sounds very creamy slurp...
SpaceF has so many echo/delay plugs to fit th dsp budget and sound

SFP, not PSP. The original owner of the DAW I used to run Giga w/ while I demo'd Scope. They are excellant reproductions of old classic Lexicon hardware FX. He was using DP boards a long time ago, and made some really nice effects, and a polyphonic synth that sounds like the old Crumar. I have heard the PSP Audioware VST FX, they are not spot on reproductions IMHO, but they are more versatile than the old hardware. Especially the 84.

Hi all,
these are some quick experiments with 4 Celmo vintage delays set on 5.46 secs, wet,, a few pitch shifters, ... not much really, I will expand this set up.
Some results are here, I have not doen anything except play 'C' into the system on Additive synth and Vectron Player.

These linked delay boxes were set to wet only, a bit of feedback, and max delay time. This doesn't need Vintage delay, the CW ones are fine, one has a HF filter on it for vintage effect.

A 5.4 sec delay = 40 inches of physical tape at 7.5 ips. So each of my simulated reel decks are 3 feet 4 inches apart, which is about right. These 'gaps' can be changed.

Then each delay/deck output can go through a pitch shifter, tremolo, reverb, whatever, on the way to a simple mixer set up where all inputs (mono) are panned across with first or source 'deck' at Left, last in chain at Right, rest panned in between.

Also use limiters wherever to control the sound.

You could use 5, 10, 20 delays units like this but the sound gets very dense.

I am in midddle of getting the SpaceF stuff and plan to do a lot of these ambient tunes over next weeks. These tunes here are just start off experiments, I have found with ambient it is good to do a lot then mix bits (10 secs - few minutes) together to make a more interesting whole.

One delayunit I would like to see developed for Scope is the TC2290.

Even if not possible to make 1 MHz samplingfrequency, all the modulations etc, would be very cool.

DAS, this is a job for you! I bet there would be more than me that would like to have that!

this is a great idea! even if i'm not shure if i want to use an interface introduced in 1986...

Of course, I did :-) it becomes very dense that way, it's hard to keep yourself from editing to go back to a "normal" delay. Fun is also in playing with both delays modulations.... it is safe to try anyway :-)

Thanks for all the comments, it's rewarding, when i look back to the almost 1 year it took to make, remake and tune Echo (was a 9 month pregnancy in fact ;-) )....

It does the best synth pads period, plus much more. The Echo 35 can emulate every tap, and aspect of the Space Station SST-282. Live you can use a slider to change the taps from a swirly chorus to a multi-tap / reverb combo with no zippering effects, just like the old UMSS. On the Oberheims it was top shelf pads which just melted away so sweetly. Ooooohhhh,....goose bumps.
