Rarefaction is the opposite of compression.
I just read the definition in Wikipedia. Just to let you know that I was on the wrong track here...

rarefaction is when a set amount of articles, in a set amount of space, suddenly has more space with the same amount of particles. ex:
you have a snare drum in front of you... when you hit the snare drum, the skin first gets pushed inward. this is the act of rarefaction, because due to the drum skin pushing inwards, you know have the same amount of particles in a space larger than before... but only for a split second... because the skin of the drum obviously is going to try to move back to it's resting spot, so the skin of course bounces up after... this is the compression... having the same amount of particles in a smaller area...

well... it may not help you make better music... but it may? who knows how a piece of information affects one person to the next...
i just like to know how things work, why things are they way they are... it is my eternal quest!!!
i figure knowing how something works, and why it works that way, will give me a better understanding of the item in question. knowing how sound travels may not help make better "music" in general... but i am sure it will help make good music sound better?

i still can't make my songs carry through the middle... i can create a nice intro, and a nice break down, and even a decent ending... but the middle of the track just sounds hollow... like something is missing!? i think it has to do with layering... maybe i am not using enough sounds? i am not sure... but i am still anxiously awaiting the day that i make my first real song...
